This initiative addresses the shortage of nurses in Maryland and works to increase the number of nursing graduates. Montgomery College has been expanding its nursing program over the past decade. Despite positive gains, there are up to 300 qualified nursing applicants on the waiting list each semester who cannot be served due to lack of capacity resulting from: (1) space constraints, and (2) available faculty/staff. Montgomery College, therefore, will implement two strategies to address the nursing shortage in Maryland through: (a) facilities enhancements creating new classroom and lab space, and (b) additional innovative staffing initiated with NSP II funds. Facilities renovations are being accomplished through 2011 using local funds, creating seminar rooms, nursing offices, labs, and classrooms. The remodeling almost doubles the current space. This significant development on campus has resolved space issues to enable program expansion and capacity building. In preparation for NSP II, a new position for a Nursing Lab and Clinical Technician, also referred to as a clinical instructor, was designed with faculty engagement and approved through HR. This innovative position was developed as a staff position to support faculty. Faculty identified the clinical instructor position as the largest potential asset to continued growth of the nursing program. NSP II funding will therefore permit the hire of 4.0 clinical instructors and 2.0 additional full-time faculty positions over five years to build program capacity and support retention efforts. Montgomery College will begin to sustain some of the positions with its operating budget funds in Years 4 and 5, with full sustainability for all positions beyond termination of the grant period. Not only does the project provide for increased positions, but also increased opportunities for ten additional clinical placements for nursing students. Current major clinical partners are Montgomery General Hospital, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington Adventist Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Sibley Hospital, Doctor's Hospital, Potomac Ridge, Washington Hospital Center, and Children's National Medical Center. The ten additional placements include: National Naval Medical Center, Providence Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital, and George Washington University Hospital. Because of these partnerships, the nursing program has the ability to place the additional students in appropriate learning environments. These relationships will be sustained beyond termination of the project period. According to the Maryland Hospital Association and the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the nursing shortage in Maryland will continue to worsen unless all schools of nursing in the state double enrollment. Montgomery College is committed to increasing the availability of competent, culturally diverse nursing graduates. This NSP II award will work toward increasing: (1) enrollment by 80 students, (2) graduates by 85 students, (3) graduation rate to 85 percent, and (4) staffing with 4.0 clinical instructor positions and 2.0 faculty positions.
