This review asks two basic questions of each course: 1) What are the two main general education skills are taught in the course? and 2) Why does this course fit into its general education category? Faculty representatives completed one review form per course to describe how the course meets the updated general education criteria approved by the full faculty in May 2008. Faculty who completed forms were asked to designate the two primary general education competencies or one primary competency and one primary area of proficiency that are introduced and/or reinforced by a course's outcomes. Form completers also described why the course is appropriately placed in one of the eight general dducation distribution areas: 1) English Composition, 2) Mathematics, 3) Speech Communication, 4) Health, 5) Arts, 6) Humanities, 7) Behavioral and Social Sciences, and 8) Natural Sciences. All of the criteria used can be seen on the General Education Page Review Process Web page at: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/genedcomm/reviewprocess1.htm. All forms completed as of 9/9/09 and the General Education Committee's decisions are shown on the general education MC Infonet Web Page. This link is viewable after signing into MyMC. Each form is designed to be useful not only in this review process, but as a reference for all faculty teaching each course. Of the 251 courses considered so far, 16 current general education courses have been withdrawn by disciplines. Several of the withdrawn courses are the second half of two-part sequences in AR [for example, AR 204 Photographic Expression II]; others withdrawn include one HE, two MU, and all honors - HP courses. Of the 235 remaining under review, 191 courses have been approved. Twelve were not approved (DN, PY and SO disciplines). In most cases, courses not approved have a prerequisite course. Courses with prerequisite courses in the same discipline typically do not meet the General Education Guideline 1, which states that a course should be "broadly foundational." An exception to this guideline exists in the natural sciences category, which permits two-course sequences. Within the behavioral and social sciences distribution, a Maryland regulation states that courses in this category must come from two different disciplines. This technicality means that a student cannot take two psychology courses to fulfill a general education requirement, because every PY course after Introduction (PY 102) requires completion of PY 102. General Education Committee members read each form prior to the meeting and pose questions to discipline representatives as needed to assure a thoughtful review. The General Education Committee applauds the faculty who turned in their homework (the forms) on time, all 223 of them! The remaining course forms will be considered at the 2009 September and October General Education Committee meetings. Meetings are open; specific times and location can be seen on the MC general education Web page, http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/genedcomm/. When does this project end? Final recommendations for a revised general education list will be sent to the CCC on October 16, 2009.
