redcrossvolunteerfairjeff2009.jpgJeff Smith is an Eagle Scout and current Montgomery College student on the Rockville Campus. Throughout middle and high school, he organized and participated in community service projects and he didn't know why college should be any different.

During the summer, Jeff contacted the Service Learning Coordinator on his campus about organizing a blood drive, and four months later, his hard work, meetings with the Red Cross, and relentless recruitment paid off: On Monday, over 30 faculty, staff, and students gave a total of 39 units of blood - and he's not done yet.

Jeff was "glad to see that there were a lot of people out willing to help save lives."

The next Red Cross Blood Drive will be Tuesday, October 27, and Jeff's excited to see how many units will be donated. He's looking forward to the 27th for one thing: "More... I'm looking to try to get even more pints of blood, help out even more, and eventually set up a donor base here at MC."

Jeff's long-term goal is for his campus to become a consistent donor site. He looks to these events to be the pilots for frequent Red Cross drives.

"One little pinch saves someone's life," Jeff says. "What happens if you have to receive blood one day?"

And to all those who donated on Monday, he said, "Thank you... Wow... I was glad to see so many people turn out."
