1 deeec6eb-5264-7e84-9df1-d2c7357036d2139252009-10-22 00:00:01.000Chelsea WaugamanAdmissions Office Receives Board of Education AwardSherman Helberg, director of admissions and enrollment management, and staff members of the Office of Admissions' recruitment team were recently honored by the Montgomery County Board of Education as team recipients of one of the 2009 Community Group Awards for Distinguished Service to Public Education. The special award recognizes and shows appreciation to individuals, groups, and business that have made exemplary contributions to public education in Montgomery County. The award came in recognition of the College's new policy that extends in-county tuition rates to all students who have graduated from an MCPS high school and applied for admission to the College within three years of graduation. In the early 1990s, Montgomery County experienced a rapid increase in immigrant residents. Economic, cultural, and financial aid barriers prevented many from that population from affording a traditional university education or an associate's degree education at Montgomery College. As a result, the Office of Admissions and Mr. Helberg worked with staff from MCPS to craft the new College policy. "It is my opinion that MC recognized the challenges of immigrant students and has taken steps to address our needs," noted Jessica Contreras, MC alumna and current Baltimore social worker, in a letter of support for the AEM award application. "Because of the great support from [Montgomery College] I feel that today I am better equipped with the necessary knowledge to respond to the needs of the community." For some students, like current student Alexandra Lopez, the new, low-cost, in-county tuition rate enabled them to pursue associate's degrees at a faster rate and for a cost more feasible to their family's financial situation. As Ms. Lopez noted in one of her award nomination letters, the cost of education no longer became a barrier for her or for her fellow students. The current recruitment team members in the Office of Admissions are: Maria Adams, college recruiter at Rockville; Camille Scott, college recruiter at Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TP/SS); Kim Brown, college recruiter at Rockville; Cathy Kwolek, coordinator of admissions and recruiting at Germantown; Jonathan Howie, coordinator of admissions and recruiting at TP/SS; Enas Elhanafi, recruitment coordinator at Rockville; Norma Winffel, outreach recruiter at Germantown, and Gloria Bonilla, community academic advising specialist at TP/SS. Patricia Chalkley, senior administrative aide, also supports the services of this office.
