A recent study of Pennsylvania Amish shows that no matter what your genetics, obesity doesn't have to be your destiny! The average American takes about 2,300 - 3,000 steps daily (about 1.5 miles) according to a study by Novartis Nutrition. Researchers measured the steps of 98 Amish adults with pedometers, and found that men took an average of 18,425 steps a day and women took 14,916. Among the Amish adults in this study, half carried "obesity genes" yet only 4 percent of this group were obese, versus 41 percent of the general U.S. population! The Mayo Clinic says this study helps demonstrate the power of an active lifestyle. And, a University of Tennessee study found that walking 10,000 steps a day had a huge impact on body fat and waist and hip measurements (all factors in preventing coronary heart disease and diabetes type 2).
