The Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers (ACET) program is a partnership program between the Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College designed to recruit and train candidates with content expertise in high need areas such as mathematics, science, and Spanish to become certified teachers for MCPS.
On October 21, the program, coordinated by Deb Poese, Director of the School of Education, received formal State Program Approval from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The ACET program was the second of three programs in the state who are participating in the pilot year of this new approval process for Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Programs (MAAPP).
A site visit team, consisting of faculty and staff from Maryland universities, Maryland local school systems and private teacher preparation programs, as well as several MSDE Program Approval staff, came to Montgomery County on October 21. After having spent much time in advance reading the Institutional Report and other artifacts that had been submitted earlier in the fall by the ACET program coordinators, the team arrived to interview MC and MCPS staff and program graduates and finalize the peer review. At the end of the day, the team presented the review findings, indicating that the program had met all standards for approval, and providing feedback on many program strengths as well as several recommendations for improvements.
Ms. Jean Satterfield, the Assistant State Superintendent for Certification and Accreditation, was present at the team's reporting out regarding the review findings to MC representative Paula Matuskey, interim senior vice president for Educational Services, and MCPS representative Susan Marks, associate superintendent for human hesources. Ms. Satterfield praised the work of the partnership, indicating that "Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College are ahead of the curve in the state with this program." The ACET program was one of the eight original Resident Teacher programs in Maryland, begun in 2006. There are now 20 MAAPP's operating in Maryland. |
