The Germantown Campus of Montgomery College is providing an alternate site for the American Mathematics Competition for middle school students. This gives students whose school is not otherwise participating in the AMC 8 Competition, or for home schooled students an opportunity to participate in this national competition.

The AMC 8 is for students in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade, but accelerated fourth or fifth grade students may also take part. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40 minute multiple choice contest covering material from the middle school curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, such topics as probability, estimation, percent, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs. No problem requires the use of algebra or a calculator.

Students aged 14.5 or younger on the day of the contest, and not be enrolled in grades 9 or higher, are invited to participate.

Interested students, parents, or teachers are invited to contact Professor Jon Scott at 240-567-7795 or by email at jon.scott@montgomerycollege.edu for further information.

Please register by completing the online form at http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/mathgt/ or by contacting Professor Scott directly by phone or email. Registration should be completed by Monday, November 9.

The American Mathematics Competition is a program of the Mathematical Association of America designed to increase interest in mathematics. For more information about these competitions visit http://www.unl.edu/amc/.
