  charts.jpgCelebrate National Health Information and Technology Week with a series of events at Montgomery College from November 2-6. Montgomery College has a program in health information management at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, teaching students to collect and manage health records, and deliver timely, accurate data to health care providers. Montgomery College's program is a unique combination of online and blended classes, which are offered in the evening with labs during the day. Students also have the option of pursuing a certificate in medical coding, and then continuing toward an A.A.S. degree.

The following activities will take place during Health Information and Technology Week:

<b>MONDAY, November 2</b>
Test your knowledge of health information management by completing a quiz! All correct entries will be entered into a drawing for a prize. On Friday, the three winning entries will be announced.

<b>TUESDAY, November 3</b>
Brown Bag Seminar - HIPAA
Noon - 1 p.m.
Health Sciences Center, Room 201
Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus

Montgomery College's health information management program will hold a brown bag seminar about HIPAA from noon to 1 p.m. Bring your own lunch and meet at Room 201 of the Health Sciences Center, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, to learn more about why HIPAA is important to you. HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which involves the rights and privacy of patients' personal health records.

Health information management program coordinator Corinne Smith will explain HIPAA and your rights as a patient. She will talk about how HIPAA impacts health care and what happens when your rights are violated.

<b>THURSDAY, November 5</b>
Brown Bag Seminar - Your Personal Health Record Noon - 1 p.m.
Health Sciences Center, Room 201
Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus

The College's health information management program will hold its second brown bag seminar with HIM program coordinator Sue Meiskey. This talk will again be held in Room 201 of the Health Sciences Center. Bring your lunch and learn about the benefits of having a personal health record, how to get started in creating your record, and what you should include.

<b>FRIDAY, November 6</b>
The winners of this week's special HIM quiz will be announced. Don't wait until Friday to turn in your entry. Get your entry in soon to possibly win a prize and to learn more about an important career in health care.
