Listen to Federal Judge Speak Today at Montgomery College

 Judge Jane R. Roth, U. S. Court of Appeals judge for the Third Circuit, will speak at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. Her topic will be "Peace and Justice and the Law." The event, co-sponsored by the college's Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement and the First-Year Experience initiative, will take place in the main theatre of the campus' new Performing Arts Center, located at Georgia Avenue and King Street (just south of Route 410) in Silver Spring. All are welcome.
Judge Roth was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals in July 1991. Prior to that, from 1985 to 1991, she served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. Educated at Smith College and Harvard University Law School, she has received honorary degrees from Widener University School of Law and the University of Delaware. She began her legal career as a member of the firm of Richards, Layton & Finger, doing general practice law with emphasis on civil litigation and defense of medical malpractice cases. From 1956 to 1962, as an administrative assistant with the U.S. Foreign Service, she was stationed in Tehran, Iran; Salisbury, Rhodesia; and Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. Judge Roth was married to the late Delaware Senator William V. Roth, Jr.
Major cases that Judge Roth has adjudicated include the following:
<b>ABDULLAH v. AMERICAN AIRLINES, INC.:</b> The decision resulted in a different approach by all airlines in situations of air turbulence so as to maximize passenger safety.
<b>BREYER v. MEISNER:</b> The plaintiff had been a member of the Gestapo in Nazi Austria. Claiming US citizenship, he wanted to come to the United States under a law stating that anyone born to American parents abroad before 1934 was considered a US citizen. This case shows how one law can conflict with another, raising the issue of which one trumps the other.
