1 3a6a6492-d6ea-6624-3d61-d58e34dc279e19672007-12-21 00:00:01.000Anne SchleicherSpring Opening Meeting January 16: Important General Education Discussion on AgendaGeneral Education Issues Discussion at the January 16 Opening Meeting Globe Hall, Germantown Campus In response to faculty suggestions, the General Education Committee has identified major issues that must be decided upon before proceeding with any revisions to the General Education Program. The Academic Assembly has allotted two hours for this discussion on January 16, 2008, at the Spring Opening Meeting. Agenda: Overview of the Philosophy of General Education - 5 minutes Process : January 16: a discussion of the issues; late March: faculty vote on the Issues; April: presentation of the proposal based on the outcome of the March vote; May: Closing Meeting: vote on the General Education Proposal. A Brief Presentation of the Major Issues - Yes and No Details (also see the General Education Page, http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/genedcomm/ ) Yes - one speech course should be required for all degree-seeking students. This is a vote to keep the current Speech Foundation requirement in place. No - a vote of no means that speech courses will become optional choices listed within the Humanities Distribution. Yes - one health course should be required for all degree-seeking students, 1 - 3 credits total. This vote keeps the current Health Foundation Requirement in place. No - a vote of no means that an Interdisciplinary and Emerging Issues Category will be created and that health courses may apply, among other courses, to be included as offerings within this new category. Subquestion: If an IE Category is created, should it be required or optional for students? Yes - transferability of courses is one consideration, but this should not be the sole determination for inclusion in the general education program. A vote of Yes means that Montgomery College will develop a transfer standard for general education courses that is one consideration among many criteria. There is no "keep the current standard of transferability" vote available because the current program was developed under two very different "transfer tests." The second set of transfer requirements was adopted in 2005 and returning to this standard would have the effect of reducing the number of courses in general education. A vote of Yes asks the General Education Committee to develop a new standard of reviewing transferability with input from faculty. No - transferability into general education categories at four-year institutions should be the determining factor for course inclusion in the general education program. A vote of no is a vote to adopt the more specific transfer standards of the Draft Proposal. Essentially, it says that transfer should be a driving factor when considering courses for the general education program. The General Education Program would be greatly reduced in size and scope, limited primarily to "common denominator" courses that are typical general education courses at most four-year institutions. 3. Open Discussions 20 minutes - General Comments about the Philosophy of General Education, a minute and a half per speaker* 20 Minutes: Speech Yes or No - 5 minutes for a Speech Presentation, then 15 minutes Open Floor, a minute and a half per speaker* 20 Minutes - Health Yes or No - 5 minutes for a Health Presentation, then 15 minutes Open Floor, a minute and a half per speaker* 20 Minutes - Expand the Interdisciplinary and Emerging Issues Category - 5 minutes for an IE Presentation, then 15 minutes Open Floor, a minute and a half per speaker 20 Minutes - Transferability Standards for General Education Courses - 5 minutes for a Transfer Standards Presentation, then 15 minutes Open Floor, a minute and a half per speaker* In the interest of fairness and allowing for the expression of a variety of viewpoints, 90-second slots will be given per speaker. If you wish to speak about any of these issues, you may sign up in advance for a 90-second spot. Unreserved time slots will be open to speakers that day. Hailed by <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/23/the-memory-police-yoko-ogawa-review" target="_blank">The Guardian</a> as, "a masterpiece, meditating on totalitarianism and resistance as well as the rhythms of life and death," The Memory Police will spark rich discussions on the themes of memory, loss, and individual autonomy. Our first meeting will take place in late September. Those interested in joining the Book Club can e-mail Yvonne Hu-Cotto, Michelle Chan, and/or Nghi Nguyen. We will meet every two weeks, covering about five chapters at each meeting. The AANHPI Book Club reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books. Previous selections include Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (FA25) and My Year Abroad by Chang Rae-Lee (SP26). Discover How MC's Assessment Centers Can Help You.The Assessment and Testing Centers, in collaboration with Center for Teaching and Learning, is offering an online workshop on using the testing services at Montgomery College. Faculty members who expect to use the Assessment and Testing Centers for in-person testing are invited to attend. The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members. We will also share resources on using HonorLock, the third-party service for online proctoring. We hope to see you!
