Poet Nikky Finney calls Cave Canem "...the major watering hole and air pocket for Black poetry." Founded in 1996 by poets Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady, Cave Canem "is a home for the many voices of African American poetry and is committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of African American poets." In addition to an annual writing retreat at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, Cave Canem programs include two book prizes with prestigious presses; workshops in New York City; Legacy Conversations with such poets and scholars as the late Lucille Clifton, Rita Dove, Arnold Rampersad and Derek Walcott; a Poets on Craft series; nationally based readings and panels; and the publication of two anthologies, Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canem's First Decade (University of Michigan Press, 2006) and The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South (University of Georgia Press, 2007). The Presidential Scholars Program at Montgomery College is seeking dedicated professionals, alumni, faculty, staff, and community leaders to serve as mentors for a dynamic group of men who are preparing to become the next generation of leaders. The Presidential Scholars Program is designed to increase the representation of underrepresented men in high-wage, high-demand careers by supporting students academically, professionally, and personally. Many of our scholars are first-generation college students who benefit tremendously from guidance, encouragement, and access to individuals who can help them navigate college, careers, and life. Faculty members who expect to use the Assessment and Testing Centers for in-person testing are invited to attend. The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members.
