Our new colleagues bring a wealth of diverse experiences and training to the teaching and learning environment. With the surge of recent retirements, new hires over the last couple of years add to the growing strength and reputation of the Area's academic programs. Thanks to all who have given so much of their time on search committees. Please join me in welcoming our current group of outstanding professionals. Dr. Uche Abanulo,assistant professor, is teaching electrical engineering courses in the Department of Physics, Engineering & Geosciences. She received her B.S.E.E., M.S.E.E., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Temple University, earning several academic distinctions and scholarships. Her research focuses on speech (signal) processing and the development of an automatic speaker count system for telephone data. She brings to her new position over five years of teaching experience in engineering and mathematics at Carroll County Community College and Temple University. Dr. Kristin Hensley joins the Biology Department as an assistant professor. She earned a B.A. in biology, cum laude, from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a recipient of a National Institutes of Health Training Grant and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology travel scholarship. Prior to her current appointment, she served as an adjunct professor at the Rockville campus and at American University. Her research on the anatomy and physiology of the retina has resulted in three publications in scientific journals and nine presentations at international meetings. Dr. Virginia Miller is an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department. Dr. Miller received a bachelor's of science in chemistry from Rider University, and master's and doctorate degrees in chemistry from Princeton University. She was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Dr. Miller has received many awards in her field, including the National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship and the American Ceramic Society Spriggs Phase Equilibria Award. Dr. German Mora is an associate professor in the Department of Physics, Engineering & Geosciences. He received master's and doctorate degrees in geology with a minor in environmental sciences from Indiana University. Dr. Mora has served as project manager at the Maryland Department of the Environment and as an adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Iowa State University, where he was awarded the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He is also a recipient of a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Gail Reichert joined the Math/Science Center as an instructional assistant. She holds a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctoral degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley. Upon completing her thesis, she was awarded a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Research Fellowship at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics. She has worked for various contracting companies under NASA science support contracts in astrophysics and remote sensing. Dr. Robert R. Romano has joined the staff of the Math/Science Center as an instructional assistant. Dr. Romano received a B.S. from SW Texas State University (now Texas State University), two master's degrees in aquatic systems biology and in environmental health science from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in environmental science and engineering from Purdue University. He has been a practicing environmental engineer and scientist for the past 31 years and has focused on water quality, aquatic biology, air quality, hazardous waste, environmental health, and energy management. He was a program director for the State of Indiana Department of Public Health, an environmental engineer for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and a country advisor for the Pan America Health Organization / World Health Organization. He taught at American University, the University of Maryland, and George Washington University. Dr. Sripriya Seetharaman is an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department. Dr. Seetharaman received a master's of science degree from the Indian Institute of Technology and a doctorate degree from Syracuse University. Dr. Seetharaman has been a visiting professor of chemistry at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. She has numerous publications in her field and is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Hailed by <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/23/the-memory-police-yoko-ogawa-review" target="_blank">The Guardian</a> as, "a masterpiece, meditating on totalitarianism and resistance as well as the rhythms of life and death," The Memory Police will spark rich discussions on the themes of memory, loss, and individual autonomy. Our first meeting will take place in late September. Those interested in joining the Book Club can e-mail Yvonne Hu-Cotto, Michelle Chan, and/or Nghi Nguyen. The Zoom meeting link will be provided as a calendar invite. We hope you will join us! Fall 2026 Book Selection: The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa (translated by Stephen Snyder) Meeting Dates/Times: TBD Location: Zoom This club is open to MC staff and faculty. We will meet every two weeks, covering about five chapters at each meeting. The AANHPI Book Club reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books. Previous selections include Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (FA25) and My Year Abroad by Chang Rae-Lee (SP26). Discover How MC's Assessment Centers Can Help You.The Assessment and Testing Centers, in collaboration with Center for Teaching and Learning, is offering an online workshop on using the testing services at Montgomery College. Faculty members who expect to use the Assessment and Testing Centers for in-person testing are invited to attend. The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members. We will also share resources on using HonorLock, the third-party service for online proctoring. We hope to see you!
