1 5b39e1ed-13a0-c824-2185-c271d13b6cfd387882012-09-04 00:00:01.000Kelly RudinShare with Students about Paul Peck Humanities Institutes Internships for Spring 2013Applications for spring 2013 internships with the Paul Peck Humanities Institute (PPHI) Internship Program are due October 1, 2012 with drafts of the essay and resume due by Sept. 18, 2012. Information sessions are set for September 7 and 10. Please share the attached flier with your students. PPHI internships enable MC students to participate in professional museum and library activities at the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This program offers students the chance to provide service to one of these institutions while feeding their passions for scholarship. Spring internships are a one-semester commitment of 16 hours spent per week at the internship site as well as enrollment in a three-credit MC Honors course. The internship includes a stipend of $1,250. The PPHI mentors students as they create their application packets. Recent placements have included the National Zoo, the National Museum of Natural History, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Digital Reference Room at the Library of Congress, and more! When our seven spring 2012 interns gathered at our spring Intern Seminar in March the experiences they shared were truly interdisciplinary and exciting. There were stories about holding an aerial map of Indonesia that had been taken from a World War II Japanese pilot, finding a flower that had been pressed into a book by Jean Jacques Rousseau, and working with the Library of Congress' international business office to organize and document information about international collections. One intern had constructed a special cold storage box to hold documents written by George Washington that she had been handling while another had been reading graffiti from the wall of a building in Pompeii that was a running exchange between two men about how bad one of their girlfriends was from 2000 years ago! Stumbling across partially bubble-wrapped mummies and discussing intellectual risk taking with top scholars have gone hand-in-hand with hearing about academic and professional careers that have sometimes spanned a century. This weeklong event is scheduled for October 26-30. This year's theme, Humanities In Action: Collaboration, Solidarity, and Hope, explores how the humanities serve as a catalyst across different spaces.
