Another Local EarthquakeA low magnitude (2.1) earthquake struck eastern Frederick County at 5:51 this past Saturday morning. Since its focus was so shallow (about three miles deep), many people in the immediate area felt weak to light shaking. While we are more likely to feel out-of-state earthquakes (like last summer's Central Virginia quake), almost 70 quakes with their origins in Maryland have been reported since 1758. In 1993, twenty small earthquakes hit the Columbia area. The highest magnitude of this series of quakes, known as the Columbia Earthquake Swarm, registered a 2.7 on the Richter scale. To prepare for future earthquake swarms, join us for the The Great Southeast ShakeOut, the region's largest ever earthquake drill. At 10:18 a.m., on October 18, 2012 (10:18, 10/18), students, faculty, and staff of Montgomery College will practice "Drop, cover and hold on," the proper technique for protecting yourself during an earthquake. To prepare for all types of emergencies, familiarize yourself with the College Emergency Procedures and develop an Emergency Kit. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES Do you know the difference between a HAZMAT Shelter-in-Place Alert and a Weather Shelter-in-Place Alert? Take a look at page six of the College Emergency Procedures (http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/emergency) to learn how to protect yourself during either a hazardous materials release or a severe weather emergency. EMERGENCY KIT The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security tells us one of the most important ways we can protect our families during an emergency is to put together an emergency supplies kit PRIOR TO the emergency. An emergency kit is a collection of basic items members of a household may need during an emergency. These items are stored in a portable container, usually near an exit door. Some items typically found in an emergency kit are: * Portable radio and batteries * Flashlight and batteries * First aid kit * Cash * Copies of personal documents * Extra car and home keys * Matches * Maps * Special supplies for infants, seniors and pets * Food - three-day supply * Medications * Water - three-day supply (three gallons per person) * Kitchen items - can opener, cups, plates, utensils * Clothing In addition to the three-day supply of food and water in your kit, you should consider maintaining a two-week supply of food and water in your home. The deadline for submission is May 26, 2026, and projects will conclude by May 31, 2027. The Innovation Fund has up to $40,000 for projects that demonstrate how they will enhance the student experience across various learning environments, aiming not just at academic success but also at contributing to a richer community fabric. Enhance the sense of connection among students, faculty, and the community, creating a pervasive sense of belonging. Beginning with the summer 2027 session, there is a new, easier way for students to register for classes. To register for summer 2027 classes, follow the instructions below: <ol> <li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li> <li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li> <li>On the Select a Term page, choose the Summer 2026 term, then click Continue.</li> <li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li> </ol> Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. Now she's a sophomore managing more than $5,000 in weekly revenue and planning her transfer to the University of Maryland or George Washington University. She chose Montgomery College's Macklin Business Institute for the hands-on experience and she says, "It's amazing. It's better than I expected." At MC, students like Nicole build real skills while preparing to transfer to four-year universities. Hands-On Experience from the Start In the Macklin Business Institute, students gain hands-on experience early. Nicole started working at the student-run MBI Café as a freshman. By her sophomore year, she became Accounting Lead -- tracking expenses, leading a team, and making real-time pricing decisions that affect Café customers. "We're doing our best not to raise prices to the point where nobody can afford it," she said. At the MBI Café, the experience is real business decision-making, not a classroom simulation. A Clear Path to Transfer Nicole has applied to the University of Maryland and George Washington University and is waiting to hear back on scholarships before making her final decision. With support from advisors and faculty mentors, she is building a clear path forward. For students looking for an affordable path to a bachelor's degree, Montgomery College's transfer pathway is a concrete start. A Community That Supports Students Students in the Macklin Business Institute build strong connections and alumni regularly return to mentor current students.
