di_0.jpgThe Marriott Hospitality Center came alive last week with the sounds of cooking and the sweet smells of lasagna, as students joined President Brian Johnson, faculty and staff members to bake food for a local homeless shelter. The event marks the third time that student clubs have worked together to cook and donate food.

Ian Henderson, vice president of the MC Student Ambassadors, invited Dr. Johnson to the cooking event, which was a collaboration between the following student clubs: MC Student Ambassadors, MC Green, Nutrition Club, Hospitality Club and the Student Senate from Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. The students and Dr. Johnson were joined by Sara Ducey, professor of nutrition; Roger Marks, instructional lab coordinator from the Communication Arts Technologies Department; Dr. Fred Katiraie, professor of mathematics; and Patti Secreto, from the Applied Technologies Department.

After spending the afternoon cooking, everyone took time to feast on the lasagnas, garlic bread, salad and brownies. More than 10 pans of lasagna and brownies were frozen and later donated to the Men's Emergency Shelter, located on Gude Drive and operated by the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless.

The Men's Emergency Shelter provides year-round, overnight shelter for men experiencing homelessness in our community. Last year the Men's Emergency Shelter served 950 men, providing them with supportive services, case management, laundry facilities, bathrooms and showers. For more information on the shelter and other services for people experiencing homelessness in Montgomery County, visit http://www.mcch.net.

This cooking event was funded by the MC Foundation. Meals from previous cooking events were donated to the Bethesda Cares charity and the food was sponsored by the student clubs and the Office of Student Life.
