She teaches in the World Languages and Philosophy Department on the Rockville Campus. When she first came to the College in 2006, she taught classes in reading on the Germantown Campus but soon after switched to Rockville. She has taught all levels of Chinese at Montgomery College. Zhang's journey to Montgomery College began decades ago. She was born in China and received her undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature from Nankai University in Tianjin, China. She moved to the United States in 1993 to pursue a Master of Education degree. She graduated from Millersville University in Pennsylvania and then went on to earn her PhD in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Zhang always knew she wanted to teach. She loved her teachers as a young child, and she became an instructor at a very early age. "I started teaching when I was a teenager and have found that I can happily pour my heart into my teaching and my students generally respond well. It's satisfying and rewarding to be a positive influence on my students, just as my professors and teachers have been for me," Zhang said. She has won numerous awards for her teaching abilities. She was named Professor of the Year from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 1990. Montgomery College presented her with its 'Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarly or Professional Accomplishments' during the 2015-2016 academic year. She also received a summer research grant to teach Chinese the Montessori Way in 2013. The summer program helped shape her teaching philosophy. "Inspired by the Montessori educational model, I help students learn in ways that bring out the sparkle in their eyes, in meaningful, creative and authentic interactions. I practice the art of teaching in students' Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky)-the zone where students are fully engaged, but not overwhelmed or under challenged. I feel wealthy when I witness students' joy and growth in learning," Zhang said. Her enthusiasm in the classroom is contagious. She adores her students and works hard to make sure everyone in her class succeeds. "I experience awesome moments in almost every class session, each time I am in class. My students show me without fail that given some time, attention, and practice, they can learn and express themselves in a new language. I am often touched by how much they share with me. After class, my students write to me thoughtful questions and provide me with comments which again invite authentic and genuine interactions. I cherish these opportunities," Zhang explained. While Zhang has experienced great success in the classroom, she also has faced some challenges. "One of the biggest challenges as a professor was helping students experiencing difficulties outside of the classroom. Each situation is unique and requires compassionate and thoughtful consideration as to what I as a professor can do and how I can approach the student. Generally I find that if I focus on a particular student or issue, and meditate on it, a way or two will show up in my mind," she said. Zhang has taught both face-to-face and online. The pandemic forced her to teach remotely, and she quickly adapted. "In the three semesters that I taught via structured remote, I was able to make dramatic changes to many of the activities that I often relied on during face-to-face teaching to suit the online environment. I became more aware of my online presence, the importance of turning on the camera in every lesson, and speaking with students in real time about what mattered to them," Zhang said. "The experience of teaching online for three semesters re-emphasized to me the importance of authenticity, relevance, and motivation in my teaching," she added. When Zhang is not teaching, she has a lot of outside interests and hobbies. "I have been practicing yoga, dance, gardening, and I am interested in alternative healing and spiritual growth. I love to grow medicinal plants and herbs as well as flowers and vegetables. I take adult ballet classes regularly and practice contemporary dance as well as ethnic Chinese and Egyptian dances," she said. I Didn't Expect This Tolu Adegbamigbe didn't plan on Montgomery College. She was a 4.0 student in high school, active in clubs and sports, and assumed community college wasn't really for someone like her. Then she looked at the financial aid offers. MC made sense. In May, she graduated with an associate's degree in psychology. While at MC, she served as president of the Black Student Union and student coordinator for the ACES Ambassador Leadership Program. But the thing that surprised her most had nothing to do with academics. She found her people. Finding a Place to Belong Tolu got involved early. Clubs, leadership roles, campus events.
