That translates to "I love teaching Latin." This perfectly describes part-time faculty professor Erika Bucciantini. She teaches Latin in the World Languages and Philosophy Department on the Rockville campus. She also teaches English on the Germantown campus and serves as an embedded coach through the Achieving the Promise Academy (ATPA). She joined the College in 2019. Bucciantini is originally from Seattle, Washington. She received her undergraduate degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington where she earned her Bachelors of Arts degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. She then went on to study at the University of Kentucky and received her Masters of Arts in Classics. She is currently working towards her doctorate degree in Public Policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Simply put, Bucciantini is a lifelong learner. She devours any opportunity she is given to increase her knowledge and she enjoys exploring information. She always has loved history. When she was in college, she became deeply interested in Latin. She would attend conventions where people only conversed in Latin. She was determined to become proficient in the language. "Latin is everywhere. It waves on state flags, glitters from seals and thresholds of universities and government institutions, adorns monuments, peeps from judicial opinions, and cries 'E Pluribus Unum' from the very money we hold in our hands. The use of Latin has in this way been baked into our systems of governance, law, and education by those before us who benefited from a classical education," Bucciantini said. She started tutoring students in Latin when she was an undergraduate and has been teaching the language to students ever since. Her desire to share her knowledge about Latin drove her to become a college professor. She brings her enthusiasm and passion into the classroom. She adores her students. "I feel proud to be able to offer an introduction to Latin as part of a rich catalog of language and humanities courses that center on the human experience here at MC. Latin students are amazing. The joy and passion each individual brings into the classroom environment makes every day fun. I am additionally in awe of my students' intellectual curiosity. Every semester, our capstone is a Cultural Appreciation project on a Greco-Roman theme, and I am amazed at what my students select to research and present to the rest of the class," Bucciantini said. "My students see Latin in our world and leave class with an appreciation for ancient studies," she added. Bucciantini has seized opportunities the College has offered to continue to study, learn, and research. In 2022, she was a Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship recipient. Her work was titled, 'Demystifying SPQR: Expanding Access and Challenging Perception'. SPQR refers to the government and the people of ancient Rome. Bucciantini's project connected museum objects from ancient Rome with museum objects here in the D.C. region. In 2024, she was honored with a Shoenberg Fellowship. Bucciantini is spending the spring semester focusing on the 'City Beautiful Movement' and the impact it has had on vulnerable communities. The 'City Beautiful Movement' began in the 1890s and continued for several decades. The goal was to redesign cities and adorn them in part with European style architecture while trying to wall off people from crime and poverty. Yet, historians look back at this movement with a critical eye. Bucciantini is exploring the 'City Beautiful Movement's impact on Washington, D.C. While her research is still in its early stages, she is examining how the creation of the Mall in D.C. displaced dozens if not hundreds of tenement residents, most of whom were Black. Workers replaced those tenement homes with monuments and open spaces. Before applying for the Shoenberg Fellowship, Bucciantini became interested in the 'City Beautiful Movement'. "The Roman Empire had a long history of colonizing, so if we as Americans are building imperial monuments, the implication is we see ourselves as the new Rome. This ideological connection spurred my research into the history of D.C., city planning, and the 'City Beautiful Movement,'" Bucciantini said. "While I am still in the investigative stage, I have come to one conclusion so far: spatial equity is how we show our commitment to justice," she added. Bucciantini will share her findings later this year. Beginning with the summer 2027 session, there is a new, easier way for students to register for classes. To register for summer 2027 classes, follow the instructions below: <ol> <li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li> <li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li> <li>On the Select a Term page, choose the Summer 2026 term, then click Continue.</li> <li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li> </ol> Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. The pop up window displays information such as the course/section notes, instructor/meeting times, corequisites, required textbooks & materials, attributes, enrollment/waitlist and fees. <ol> <li>Add classes by selecting the sections you want. If a class is full, you may have the option to join a waitlist.</li> <li>Review and submit your selections in the Summary area to complete registration.
