In the months leading up to the election, Americans have been inundated with polls. Polling and surveying people's opinions are not new. It has been around in its current form since the 1930s, and pollsters do not just focus on politics. They ask people's opinions on a variety of topics such as pop culture, consumer issues, and even health care. Part-time faculty member Steven Fink always has been fascinated with analyzing surveys. He is a researcher at heart and has a deep understanding of how data is collected. He currently works as a statistician for the National Center for Health Statistics which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His specific job is to analyze data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study has been conducted for about 50 years and it tries to understand the health and nutrition status of adults and children in the United States. Fink's job is to analyze the response rates and the quality of the data collected in the surveys. When Fink is not working his full-time job, he teaches sociology in the Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice Department on the Rockville campus. He joined the College in 1993 and has marked 30 years teaching at the school. He brings his lifetime of experience into the classroom. One part of the sociology course is teaching students about research methods. There is an entire chapter in the book Fink uses that is devoted to research. "I tell my students I know much more than the authors who wrote this chapter. I am able to go more into detail about the different methodologies and how you collect data. I am able to give the students a much better appreciation for the challenges that sociologists or any researchers face," Fink said. The Silver Spring native graduated from Springbrook High School in 1979. During his senior year, he enrolled at Montgomery College to see if he was ready to take a college course. It turns out the course he enrolled in was Sociology 101, the course he currently teaches. The course was taught in the Humanities Building. "The irony is I often teach in the same classroom as the one I sat in when I was in school. Perhaps this inspired me to return to teach at MC," Fink said. After high school, Fink attended George Washington University where he majored in psychology and statistics. When he was a young boy, his best friend's father was a statistics professor at G.W.U. His name was Dr. Arthur Kirsch. Fink took two statistics classes with Kirsch while at college. "He was the one person who probably had the most important influence on my life, both personally and professionally. He not only taught statistics but he actually gave examples about real life, combining both psychology and sociology. I felt he made statistics more real," Fink said. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut and decided to pursue his master's in Sociology and Survey Research. "While I majored in psychology as an undergraduate, I was always interested in analyzing surveys. I took several methods classes, and there was one professor that told me about a program at the University of Connecticut that combined sociology and survey research. I never looked back and I really appreciate the material and the perspective that sociologists bring," Fink said. Over the course of his career, Fink has worked both in the private sector and for the federal government. He has taught Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software to more than 1,000 researchers, analyzed hundreds of surveys, published dozens of articles and presented results at numerous professional conferences. Fink became interested in teaching because he always felt he could relate to students. He was a camp counselor for a number of years, and then he served as a Teaching Assistant when he was in graduate school. "I enjoy the interactions with students. I think I am a pretty patient person, and I like to explain things on a level in which I think students can understand the material. I like to put myself in their shoes. I feel I am pretty relaxed and pretty chill. When I am teaching a new concept, I introduce it, and then initiate a discussion on the topic. They can ask questions, or share their experiences related to the concept. My approach to teaching is very informal and interactive," Fink said. When Fink is not working or teaching, he enjoys playing sports. He used to play a lot of racquetball, but took up pickleball during the pandemic.
