1 300a11a4-60b8-fef4-9586-6934411569501209972025-04-21 00:00:01.000Elizabeth FeldmanPart-time Faculty April Spotlight: Emma O'NealBy Liz Feldman on Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute "The influence of a good teacher can never be erased."-Unknown Part-time faculty member Emma O'Neal said this is one of her favorite quotes about teaching. O'Neal is a member of The English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP), Linguistics, and Communication Studies Department. She began teaching at the College in 2018. She usually teaches Foundations of Human Communication (Comm 108) and Business and Professional Speech Communication (Comm 112). She has taught face to face on all three campuses and has taught both asynchronous and synchronous courses online. She began her education at Howard University before receiving her undergraduate degree in Communication from Trinity College. Later, she earned her master's in Mass Media Communication from the same school which changed its name to Trinity Washington University. O'Neal is well traveled. While she considers Washington D.C. her home, she moved around a lot when she was younger because her father served in both the Navy and the Army. She has lived on both coasts, and she has spent time overseas in Italy, Guam, and Bermuda. After she finished her education, O'Neal ventured into public relations. Her writing expertise was utilized at the nonprofit Africare, the Small Business Development Center on Howard University's campus, and later at an advertising agency in Chicago. Upon her return to D.C, she was hired as the Promotion Director at WHUR-FM and later, Radio One. She also had experience working in the corporate world. Some of her employers included Kraft Foods, the Kennedy Center, and Disney. She also worked as a Marketing and Promotion Consultant for NBC4. She worked on several promotional campaigns during her 4 years at NBC4 such as the annual For Your Health and Fitness Expo, Camp 4 Kids, and the Cherry Blossom Festival. During this time, O'Neal had to deal with some life altering changes which included helping her parents. She ended up moving to Dayton, Ohio where she worked in the marketing department of a Warner Brothers Network. This was in the early 2000's. "There were very few women who looked like me there that worked in television marketing and moving to a smaller media market was a challenge. Within a few years there, I began thinking about what the next stage of my life would look like," O'Neal said. She decided to get some career advice from the Dayton Urban League. Someone there asked her if she had ever taught. O'Neal had worked as a substitute teacher when she was attending Howard University. That impressed the people at the Urban League. They asked O'Neal if she would teach their General Education Development (GED) students. "I was completely overwhelmed with 'how did I get here' thoughts. After visiting again and sitting in on the program, I started teaching part-time GED coursework. That was my intro to education," O'Neal said. She said one student she met changed the course of her career. "Daniel was a refuge from Sudan. He had walked the deserts to freedom after watching his family die at the hands of the military. He was driven to finish his education as quickly as he could to help those family members still trapped in Sudan immigrate to the United States. His English was challenged, so we just continued to work on what would best get him through the test. Within nine and a half months, he passed the GED exam. An area school, Sinclair Community College, honored both of us at a luncheon. I was offered my first teaching position at the College," O'Neal said. O'Neal went on to teach at a number of colleges and universities in Dayton. Eventually she and her son, Malacki, moved back to Washington, D.C. "I can't believe I have almost worked as long in education as I did in public relations, marketing, and promotions. I have had an interesting and varied career. I am a true example that people can recreate themselves if they make the effort," O'Neal said. Her shift to education has been rewarding. She hopes students who take her classes will learn to be effective communicators and master the skills to do public speaking. When O'Neal is not in the classroom, she owns a thrifting business online. She also sells homewares at the Georgetown Flea Market in D.C. She also enjoys traveling, watching movies, and reading books. She is a member of several book clubs. When she has time, she enjoys taking holiday trips with her adult son, who is now 24. Dropping your completed ballot directly into an official campus drop box provides a safe, reliable, and contact-free method to guarantee your ballot is received and processed on time.
