The College prepares students who seek an associate's degree in nursing, but it also provides training to people already in the field. Part-time faculty member Beri Kari-Fonge has taught at the College since 2015. She has worn many hats during that time. She has taught courses through the Associate Degree of Nursing Program. In 2019, she was promoted to serve as an Assistant Professor of Nursing for a year. She currently teaches in the Nurse Refresher program. These courses are designed for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs). The classes are offered through the Workforce Development and Continuing Education (WD&CE) program at the College. Kari-Fonge also has taught Certified Nursing Assistants through WD&CE. She is an advocate for the Alumni Association's Nursing chapter, and she acts as the chapter's liaison to the Board of Governors. She also is unique, in part, because she is a former student at the College. Her journey to the College began thousands of miles away. Kari-Fonge was born in the Northwest Region of Cameroon in West Africa. She attended the University of Buea in Cameroon where she earned a degree in Microbiology. In 2002, she earned a partial scholarship to study in the United States. She attended Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas before transferring to Montgomery College in 2003. She finished her associate's degree in nursing in 2005. After she earned her associate's degree, Kari-Fonge worked for a number of years as a registered nurse at several hospitals in Maryland and Washington, D.C. During this time, she also got married and started a family. Kari-Fonge decided to go back to school, and she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing online from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2014. Four years later, she earned her Master's in Nursing Education from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. Her interest in nursing began when she was young, and she credits her parents for instilling confidence in her to pursue her dream. "I was influenced by a combination of personal experiences and the guidance of my parents, especially my father's belief in my potential within the healthcare field. It's clear that my early educational strengths in science and my parents' insight into my abilities played a significant role in steering me toward this path," Kari-Fonge said. While nursing was her primary career, Kari-Fonge, also developed a love for teaching. "My journey into parenthood allowed me to rediscover my hidden talents. I also received encouragement from colleagues and mentors to teach. Finally, the shift from a demanding hospital environment to the flexibility of teaching certainly seemed like a perfect fit for me. It has allowed me to balance my professional and personal life while nurturing my passion for teaching," Kari-Fonge said. She has had many mentors along the way, but perhaps none was more influential than her mother. "It is touching to share about my mother as my great mentor and the legacy she left behind. Her resilience, determination, and dedication have been incredibly inspiring. Carrying forward her spirit of hard work is a beautiful tribute to her memory," Kari-Fonge explained. Over the past ten years, Kari-Fonge has developed her own teaching philosophy. She said it is important that professors create a comfortable environment for their students and make everyone in the classroom feel at ease with their surroundings. She also said it is important for professors to be present and responsive to their students' needs. That means being flexible and willing to engage with students in different learning environments whether it is online, face-to-face, or some other format. She hopes students who take her classes will learn some key concepts such as effective communication, ethics, empathy, and knowledge that are critically important in the healthcare field. When Kari-Fonge is not teaching, she has a busy life outside of the classroom. She and her husband have three children. "Balancing my passion for teaching, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and spending quality time with my family are no small feats," Kari-Fonge said. She enjoys many activities that include gardening, aerobic exercising, volunteering, and teaching at Sunday school. Kari-Fonge said she brings a lot of energy and love to everything she does. She is dedicated to her family and her community while staying active and healthy. She considers herself a positive person, and her journey from Cameroon to Montgomery County, and from nursing to teaching, while not easy, have been incredibly rewarding.
