Ferguson teaches Business Law on all three campuses. She is a member of the Business, Economics, Accounting, Computer Applications, Hospitality Management, and Paralegal Studies (BEACAHMPS) Department. Her love of teaching developed after years of working as a lawyer. Ferguson was born in Sumter, South Carolina. Her father served in the Air Force, and like many military families they moved around a lot. She graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and history. She then earned her law degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. After she graduated, she and her husband moved to Dublin, Georgia where she worked in private practice. She realized she did not want to litigate. Her life suddenly changed course. She had an opportunity to teach part-time at Morris College, an HBCU school, in her hometown of Sumter. Ferguson taught law, and she discovered how much she enjoyed working with students. "The first day in the classroom was a learning experience for me. The diversity in the room was vast. My students were from different geographical locations and family dynamics. They had different purposes for why they were furthering their education," Ferguson said. "I knew that I had to make their learning experience stimulating. I created an environment where the students themselves engaged in learning. I realized I could make a difference in the learning process and not in the courtroom," Ferguson explained. Her experience at Morris College helped launch her teaching career. She took her next job at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina where she headed the school's Paralegal program. From there, she went to the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Ferguson was an Assistant Professor in the Legal Studies Department. She also taught students who were pursuing their doctorate in education. When she retired from the school, Ferguson was serving as an Assistant Dean. However when she first started at The University of West Florida, Ferguson admits she faced some challenges. "The students never had an African American teacher. They challenged my credentials, my knowledge of the subject matter, and they felt superior to me. So much so that I had my chairperson correct their papers. As the chairperson and I thought, a few students challenged their grades and were shocked to find out that their papers were graded by the chairperson who was white," Ferguson said. Education is constantly evolving, and Ferguson has kept up with those changes including the use of Artificial Intelligence. She said some students turn to AI to write their papers. "The challenge is to teach students how to use AI with integrity, and to show them how to incorporate their thinking in their work," Ferguson said. She is herself a deep thinker. She has had numerous articles published on education and the law. She helped develop courses at The University of West Florida and she received numerous awards over her 30 years at the school. Ferguson returned to Sumter after she retired, and then Covid-19 hit. Her only son and his wife had a child during Covid-19. They live in Maryland. Ferguson decided to move to Maryland so she could live closer to them. Her son and daughter-in-law now have two children and Ferguson says they are "the loves of my life." She began teaching at Montgomery College in 2021. Ferguson is a life-long learner. She completed the Eric Grosse Teaching Excellence Fellowship while at the College. Ferguson also is one of three part-time faculty members to receive a Shoenberg Fellowship this year. Her research proposal is titled, "The History and Significance of Safe Spaces, Safe Havens, Minority Groups and Organizations and the Use of Pronouns." "These concepts have become increasingly prominent in discussions of social justice, inclusivity, and equity," Ferguson said. Her proposal will explore the historical development and contemporary significance of safe spaces and safe havens. She will focus on their role in supporting minority groups and organizations. She will examine the intersection of these concepts with the use of pronouns.
