She knows the importance of communication. After all, she teaches in the Communication Studies Department. Hill joined the College 9 years ago. She teaches Foundations of Human Communication and Business and Professional Speech Communication. Hill also teaches Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Prep and General Educational Development (GED) classes through Workforce Development Continuing Education (WDCE). Hill is originally from Suitland, Maryland. She graduated from Suitland High School and then attended Prince George's Community College. She transferred to Bowie State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Media. She later went on to earn her Master's in Broadcast and Electronic Communication from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She had jobs in radio, but she always had an interest in teaching and helping others. "When I transitioned from middle to high school, I was labeled SLRD (Slow Learning Reading Disability) and I was placed in Special Education. I did not know what that was at the time. I just knew I was not with my friends, and I clearly was being treated differently. When I asked why I could not be in my friends' classes, I was told, 'Because you are not smart enough.' Who tells a child that? I was devastated," Hill said. She said luckily her mother advocated for her and demanded she be moved out of Special Education classes. Hill said she was determined to prove to herself and to others who initially evaluated her that she could succeed. She said she worked hard to strengthen her academic weaknesses. As she grew older, Hill took every opportunity and used it to help anyone who may have needed a bit of extra support. "What I realized was Bowie State prepared me for a job, but not a career. Marquette University, with its legacies and alumni networks, showed me a different system. After I graduated, I went back to my Bowie State Department chair, and shared my disappointment. He said you need to come and teach the students coming behind you. Those conversations led to my first adjunct teaching position," Hill said. When she first started teaching, her biggest challenge was figuring out how to take her experiences in the professional world and translate that into academia. She hopes when students complete her courses, they will become effective communicators. Students often have to do public speaking in class, and that can be both difficult and scary for some people. Hill said some of her most rewarding moments in the classroom are when her students "face their fear and give an awesome presentation they never knew they could." Hill has received numerous awards in her career. She has been honored for her work in radio and as a communicator and motivational speaker. She is one of three people to receive a Shoenberg Fellowship from the College this year. Her project will examine the academic performance of adult English Language Learners (ELLs). Hill's study will explore how positive self-talk and integrating communication coaching strategies into English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction influences learners' confidence and their test performance. Hill is working with the organization, Classroom 2 Community. "I came up with this idea because all communication begins with intrapersonal communication or self-talk. How we talk to ourselves determines all of our outcomes in life. I found that my learners who do not have English as their first language would lack the confidence to present themselves as the capable and competent learners they were. Negative self-talk restricted their ability to see their progress and potential," Hill said. "We will integrate communication coaching techniques and life skills into English language instruction. Through both qualitative and quantitative measurements we expect to see a clear difference between the academic outcomes of students who utilized positive self-talk strategies compared to learners who did not," Hill added. When Hill is not teaching, she works as the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Frederick County. "To me, my work in adult education is just an extension of my work in higher education. My goal is always to help others become the best version of themselves," Hill said. Even though Hill is very busy, she finds time to unwind. Beginning with the summer 2026 session, there is a new, easier way for students to register for classes. To register for summer 2026 classes, follow the instructions below: <ol> <li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li> <li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li> <li>On the Select a Term page, choose the Summer 2026 term, then click Continue.</li> <li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li> </ol> Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. The pop up window displays information such as the course/section notes, instructor/meeting times, corequisites, required textbooks & materials, attributes, enrollment/waitlist and fees. <ol> <li>Add classes by selecting the sections you want. If a class is full, you may have the option to join a waitlist.</li> <li>Review and submit your selections in the Summary area to complete registration.
