She knows the importance of communication. After all, she teaches in the Communication Studies Department. Hill joined the College 9 years ago. She teaches Foundations of Human Communication and Business and Professional Speech Communication. Hill also teaches Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Prep and General Educational Development (GED) classes through Workforce Development Continuing Education (WDCE). Hill is originally from Suitland, Maryland. She graduated from Suitland High School and then attended Prince George's Community College. She transferred to Bowie State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Media. She later went on to earn her Master's in Broadcast and Electronic Communication from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She had jobs in radio, but she always had an interest in teaching and helping others. "When I transitioned from middle to high school, I was labeled SLRD (Slow Learning Reading Disability) and I was placed in Special Education. I did not know what that was at the time. I just knew I was not with my friends, and I clearly was being treated differently. When I asked why I could not be in my friends' classes, I was told, 'Because you are not smart enough.' Who tells a child that? I was devastated," Hill said. She said luckily her mother advocated for her and demanded she be moved out of Special Education classes. Hill said she was determined to prove to herself and to others who initially evaluated her that she could succeed. She said she worked hard to strengthen her academic weaknesses. As she grew older, Hill took every opportunity and used it to help anyone who may have needed a bit of extra support. "What I realized was Bowie State prepared me for a job, but not a career. Marquette University, with its legacies and alumni networks, showed me a different system. After I graduated, I went back to my Bowie State Department chair, and shared my disappointment. He said you need to come and teach the students coming behind you. Those conversations led to my first adjunct teaching position," Hill said. When she first started teaching, her biggest challenge was figuring out how to take her experiences in the professional world and translate that into academia. She hopes when students complete her courses, they will become effective communicators. Students often have to do public speaking in class, and that can be both difficult and scary for some people. Hill said some of her most rewarding moments in the classroom are when her students "face their fear and give an awesome presentation they never knew they could." Hill has received numerous awards in her career. She has been honored for her work in radio and as a communicator and motivational speaker. She is one of three people to receive a Shoenberg Fellowship from the College this year. Her project will examine the academic performance of adult English Language Learners (ELLs). Hill's study will explore how positive self-talk and integrating communication coaching strategies into English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction influences learners' confidence and their test performance. Hill is working with the organization, Classroom 2 Community. "I came up with this idea because all communication begins with intrapersonal communication or self-talk. How we talk to ourselves determines all of our outcomes in life. I found that my learners who do not have English as their first language would lack the confidence to present themselves as the capable and competent learners they were. Negative self-talk restricted their ability to see their progress and potential," Hill said. "We will integrate communication coaching techniques and life skills into English language instruction. Through both qualitative and quantitative measurements we expect to see a clear difference between the academic outcomes of students who utilized positive self-talk strategies compared to learners who did not," Hill added. When Hill is not teaching, she works as the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Frederick County. "To me, my work in adult education is just an extension of my work in higher education. My goal is always to help others become the best version of themselves," Hill said. Even though Hill is very busy, she finds time to unwind. Three faculty and staff presented, and 15 students presented their research at the conference. Presentations spanned across STEM from vaccine hesitancy, a bioinformatics dive into algae, best practices for a computer science club, and so much more. Montgomery College students earned top marks in the oral presentations. Selena Ritschel (faculty mentor Evdokia Kastanos) placed 1st with their presentation "Lysogenic properties of Bacteriophages, isolated as part of the HHMI SEA-PHAGES program in introductory biology" and Julia Mesquita Peterson (faculty mentor Kiersten Newtoff) placed 3rd with their presentation "Human activity as a predictor of nest predation in Eastern Bluebirds: A comparative study of urban campuses and woodland preserves.". bd3956d9-d1c9-69d4-d597-5235600af7e31255972026-05-11 00:00:01.000Elizabeth FeldmanPart-time Faculty May SpotlightBy Liz Feldman on Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute "Nature has been for me, for as long as I remember a source of solace, inspiration, adventure, and delight; a home, a teacher, a companion."-Lorraine Anderson, free-lance writer and editor. This quote captures the spirit and career of part-time faculty member Amy Wynia. She is a conservationist, environmentalist, avian expert, and naturalist. Wynia has taught several courses in Biology since joining the College in 2020. Those include Principles of Biology I, Natural Science of the Chesapeake Bay, and Environmental Biology. Wynia lives in Cedar Springs, Michigan and only teaches remotely. She joined the College when the pandemic struck. The Biology Department had a remote teaching job available and hired Wynia. She has been part of the College community ever since. She grew up in Michigan and became interested in wildlife when she was a child. She and her father would spend time outdoors, and Wynia developed a love for nature. After finishing high school, Wynia attended the University of Rhode Island where she earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Wildlife Conservation Biology. She also minored in Botany. She then went on to earn her Masters of Science in Biology with a focus in Ornithology from Arkansas State University. Wynia then pursued her doctorate in Biology with a focus in Ornithology from the University of North Texas. Wynia is an avian ecologist. She loves studying and learning about birds. Her favorite bird is the Magellanic Woodpecker. She studied this species as part of her dissertation research in southern Chile. "They are the largest woodpeckers in South America, and in my opinion are a charismatic and striking species. The male has a bright, red head, and the female has a black curly crest. I not only appreciate their beauty, but the value they bring to their ecosystems," Wynia explained. She is not a fan of House Sparrows or other invasive species. Wynia does not appreciate birds that she said "outcompete native species for resources." Studying nature is not a risk free adventure. Wynia conducted a lot of fieldwork as she pursued her graduate degrees. While in Arkansas, "I was working in forests with many dangerous and sometimes difficult species. I encountered bears, alligators, feral hogs, venomous snakes, poison ivy, mosquitoes and ticks. Not all these species were scary, but they definitely made fieldwork more interesting and challenging," she said. While people routinely see birds flying in the air, individuals may not know how important they are in nature. "Birds have instrumental value to people. For example birds help pollinate plants, disperse seeds, reduce human stress, and provide aesthetic value. Birds are essentially the only taxonomic group that is easy to observe in many habitats. We can find birds on every continent," Wynia said. She explained birds have many interesting behaviors. For example, crows can remember people's faces and can solve puzzles. "Many avian species can mimic sounds and words, and many make incredibly intricate nests. Unfortunately many avian species have declined and are threatened due to climate change," she said. Wynia enjoys passing on her knowledge about nature to her students. When she was an undergraduate, she was inspired to teach by her Wetland Ecology Professor, Dr. Frank Golet. "He was an amazing professor who cared deeply about his students, and I wanted to instill that passion, excitement, and care in students," Wynia said. "I hope students experience my enthusiasm for science and teaching. I hope it inspires them to find something about which they are equally passionate and enthusiastic. I also hope students experience a relaxing, respectful environment where diverse backgrounds are welcome," Wynia explained. She holds her students to high standards while making sure they reach their academic goals. "I want them to be successful professionally and personally which is why I stress the importance of deadlines, professional communication, and advocating for themselves. I want my students to finish my course with a strong understanding of the material. I also want them to know I cared about them and supported them to the best of my ability," Wynia said. When Wynia is not teaching, she enjoys observing birds in nature and being outdoors. She also enjoys traveling and learning new cultures. Please review the curriculum offerings and contact a CCC CAP as soon as possible if a program or course needs to be created, revised, or discontinued for inclusion in the catalog. The primary deadlines for revisions to the 2027-2028 catalog are as follows: <ul> <li>October 3, 2026 - Curriculum actions requiring approval by the Board of Trustees and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC)</li> <li>November 6, 2026 - Curriculum actions requiring notification to MHEC</li> <li>April 2, 2027 - All other curriculum actions affecting the 2027-2028 catalog</li> </ul> The attached memo includes additional details, including descriptions of the various curriculum actions and their final approvers. After April 2, the CCC will only accept editorial corrections to the catalog.
