He is a professional actor and director. He teaches several courses in the Performing Arts Department on the Rockville campus. They include Fundamentals of Acting, Intro to Theatre, and Movement for the Actor. He also serves as the Department's Resident Fight and Intimacy Director. This means he helps choreograph and direct intimate and violent moments in all of the College's theater productions. He also provides instruction in fight and intimacy work in all of his acting classes. He is a resource about these topics to his colleagues in the Department. Herman also teaches English 102 at Rockville. The Silver Spring native joined the College in 2022. He attended Cornell University where he double majored in Theatre and Dance. He also minored in music. Herman then worked as an actor, director, and teacher for a few years before earning his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Acting and Directing from Brown University. He said he came back to this region "because the DMV has the most theatres outside of New York City. It's an incredible artistic community." Herman's interest in theater dates back to when he was a teenager. "I always did theatre in high school but thought I would go into something like business. In college, I was getting good grades in theatre classes, so I thought I would double major. Then, a teacher asked if I had ever considered a career in acting. I had not. When I graduated, I started finding success auditioning and becoming part of the theatre community in D.C. I kept at it and found a dedicated MFA program to further hone my skills," Herman explained. He has performed in a number of plays. One of his favorites was the world premiere of 'Trayf' which he performed at Theater J in Washington, D.C. The play is about two best friends who are growing up and growing apart. Herman said the show was gut wrenching and funny at the same time. He enjoys musicals as well. Two of Herman's all- time favorites are Fiddler on the Roof and Ragtime. While he has not performed in either one, he would like to someday. He also has helped with the College's theater productions. His favorite to date was 'The Liar' which students performed last fall. Herman directed the play. He said the show is about the art of lying. It featured mistaken identity, an imaginary swordfight, and impromptu musical numbers. Herman did not always think about teaching as a possible career. However, he said a colleague brought up the idea to him years ago while they were on a drive. Herman thought he would most enjoy teaching high school and college students. "That's where artists can really find themselves and form connections that will shape them for the future. I love being able to help folks along their journey," Herman said. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time teaching at the College. "I love these specifically driven, diverse students. They are the lifeblood of the College, and the future of our world. We have to do right by them, and support them," Herman said. He is impressed with what he has seen in the classroom especially when he has taught some older students. "I have had a few lifelong learners who have given so much to the class with their perspective and artistry. Their questions and work ethic really raise the bar in the class," Herman explained. "I've seen students discover their artistic voice, and create truly stunning, professional-grade work. I've also had students come up to me to share how safe and open they feel in my classroom. Creating a space where students can be their fullest selves, be vulnerable and ask difficult questions is my whole goal," Herman added. He said he hopes his students will leave his classes more curious, better critical observers, and challenge norms. Herman believes the keys to becoming a successful actor are tenacity, dependability, and the ability to fall in love over and over again with each play even if an individual does not get cast for a role. He said having the ability to read, analyze, and digest material is important. He also said it is important to "understand your instrument (voice, body, and imagination)." Beginning with the summer 2026 session, there is a new, easier way for students to register for classes. To register for summer 2026 classes, follow the instructions below: <ol> <li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li> <li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li> <li>On the Select a Term page, choose the Summer 2026 term, then click Continue.</li> <li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li> </ol> Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. The pop up window displays information such as the course/section notes, instructor/meeting times, corequisites, required textbooks & materials, attributes, enrollment/waitlist and fees. <ol> <li>Add classes by selecting the sections you want.
