After all, the Silver Spring native was a journalist for nearly four decades. He currently teaches journalism in the Communications Department. He teaches both online and face-to-face on the Rockville campus. Tropin joined the College in 2003. When he looks back at his career, he said his work as a faculty adviser for The Globe, MC's student newspaper, based on the Germantown campus is by far his most rewarding experience. "When I took over The Globe, it was a traditional paper with print articles only. We had a staff of four students. Three years later, something special happened. One of my reporters went on a class trip to the Chesapeake Bay. He videotaped the trip, and we published a link on the Globe, so everyone could see the video," Tropin said. He and his staff realized the Globe could do more than just publish print articles. The staff remained small until about three years ago. "To my delight, the word got around that The Globe was a place where students could use different forms of communication. Suddenly we had 15 to 16 staff members, all doing different things: podcasts, sports journalism, photo essays, opinion essays, and more. We even had poetry," Tropin explained. He said The Globe went through the same metamorphosis that traditional newspapers like The Washington Post and The New York Times have experienced since these publications are now multi-media with print and video. The Globe provides students an opportunity to discover if they want to pursue a career in journalism or communication. He is proud that many of his students who have transferred to other schools have become journalism majors. Tropin, himself, earned his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Maryland at College Park. "I originally wanted to be a cartoonist. However, I changed my mind after the college newspaper's Christmas party and I saw the great camaraderie of the other staffers. I became a sports reporter and found I love writing," Tropin said. He explained he was covering the swim team at UMD, and the swim coach happened to be a friend of a famous movie star at the time, Buster Crabbe, who was also an Olympic champion. "Crabbe came to campus and I was able to interview him. The feature earned me an internship which resulted in a full time job at the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), a D.C. based legal and economic news organization," Tropin said. He stayed at BNA for 37 years. He had already earned his Master's degree from John Hopkins University in creative non-fiction. Tropin began to think about other career possibilities. "I thought teaching would be an exciting challenge," Tropin explained. While he was still at BNA, he began to teach at the College. "My managing editor graciously let me go from BNA to Takoma Park to teach a journalism class, and then I returned to the office. It worked out, and I was hooked on teaching," Tropin said. Four years later, BNA announced it was moving its offices from Georgetown to Crystal City, Virginia. Tropin saw it as a sign to leave journalism for teaching. He began teaching journalism and communication courses at a number of colleges and universities after he left BNA. Besides teaching and his involvement with The Globe, Tropin is an active member of the Part-Time Faculty Union. Last May, he became director of the union, succeeding Victoria Baldassano, who stepped down as the union head. As its new leader, Tropin said he wants to help improve the lives of part-time faculty members. "Our contract with MC is fairly generous. MC adjuncts get paid better than most community college adjuncts and adjuncts at our state universities. But the higher pay cannot offset the current situation where part-time faculty members are getting fewer class assignments. MC's enrollment numbers are improving but we are not back to pre-Covid days," Tropin said. "Adjuncts that used to get the maximum number of three sections are only getting one section per semester. In some departments, long time adjuncts are not getting classes at all. My union is working on ways to make sure the fewer number of classes are distributed fairly among part-timers without intruding on the right of department chairs to select the professor who is best suited to teach a particular class or section," Tropin added.
