Part-time faculty member Anthony Santana knows a lot about how money works. He teaches two introductory courses in Economics on the Germantown campus. They are: Principles of Economics I which focuses on macroeconomics, and Principles of Economics II which deals with microeconomics. Santana joined the College in 2019. However, his journey here took some twists and turns. He grew up in New Jersey and started out as a European history major at Princeton University. However, he switched majors and colleges. He completed his undergraduate degree in Economics and Accounting from a Jesuit College in New Jersey. He became a Certified Public Accountant and later obtained three Master's degrees in Economics. Santana said he pursued these degrees because of his strong interest in economics. He had a long career in Finance and worked for a number of successful corporations. However, he said after a while he felt unfulfilled. "I finally retired early, and started teaching part-time in New York in 2015. I wanted to help young people learn to earn success. I was raised in an immigrant family and life was a daily struggle before I graduated college," Santana said. He became interested in teaching when he was in school. "I found a few great teachers, but not many were good at explaining things clearly. They were unable to put knowledge in context, so that a person could relate it to everyday life," Santana said. Once he began working in the financial field, Santana obtained valuable hands-on experience. He wanted to share what he learned. "I became determined that if I had the chance, I would explain how the world works in terms of finance," Santana said. He wanted to help younger people succeed and not experience the struggles he faced when he was younger. He hopes his students will take information they learn from his course and apply it to current events and to their everyday lives. Santana said he feels most gratified when he talks about how the economy works and then a student is able to connect that information to what is happening in the world. "Those moments make it all worthwhile," Santana explained. When it comes to financial advice, Santana said people should be cautious with their money. He said sometimes advice from experts can be "risky business." However, he explained most financial professionals will say "if you invest a part of your money from a young age, in a well-diversified mutual fund, it may multiply enough so that you can stop working early, so you have many years to enjoy it." Each semester he ends his classes with a group project. Students work in teams and use the economic theories they learned in class to analyze a particular country or marketplace. "I emphasize to my students that this type of project will prepare them to communicate as a manager in a future role. My aim is to prepare students for success," Santana said. He also provides some important career advice to students. "I always tell students when they take a job to make sure they have a good personal experience with their prospective boss, who may turn out to be a good mentor. I was lucky to follow my instincts and accept offers primarily from very nice people who were very decent and cared about my career," he added. Santana said he has thoroughly enjoyed his time teaching at the College. "I love the fresh air, the fresh faces, the kind staff, and friendly atmosphere throughout the campus," Santana said. When Santana is not teaching, he loves to travel. He has visited many places throughout the United States, and some exotic places around the world. He began traveling when he was 21 years old. Most recently, Santana visited China and Qatar. Santana also enjoys spending his free time challenging himself intellectually. He delves into economic theory and he loves to play chess. Beginning with the summer 2027 session, there is a new, easier way for students to register for classes. To register for summer 2027 classes, follow the instructions below: <ol> <li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li> <li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li> <li>On the Select a Term page, choose the Summer 2026 term, then click Continue.</li> <li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li> </ol> Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. The pop up window displays information such as the course/section notes, instructor/meeting times, corequisites, required textbooks & materials, attributes, enrollment/waitlist and fees. <ol> <li>Add classes by selecting the sections you want. If a class is full, you may have the option to join a waitlist.</li> <li>Review and submit your selections in the Summary area to complete registration.
