Now more than five years later, I wanted to update his story: Powerful. Sweet. Soulful. Cerebral. These are just some of the emotions people may experience when they listen to Montgomery College part-time professor Reginald Cyntje. It is not Cyntje's words that evoke such a potent response, but it is the dazzling music he plays on the trombone. He has played trombone for more than 30 years. Cyntje began his teaching career at Montgomery College in 2013. He is a member of the Music Department on the Rockville campus. He teaches a variety of courses that include 'History of Jazz' and 'American Popular Music' to name just a few. Besides teaching at the College, Cyntje is the Director of Jazz Studies at The Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. He is an award winning musician, composer, and producer. He has performed at a number of venues in the D.C. region including the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Cyntje also has toured around the United States, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. He was born in Roseau, the capital of Dominica, an island nation in the Caribbean. He grew up on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Music has always been an important part of his life. "There was music everywhere growing up in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I remember seeing an older student playing the trombone in elementary school. I became intrigued. I was influenced by my band teachers and local musicians," Cyntje said. His first foray into teaching happened when he was just 15 years old when he began sharing his music knowledge with others. "I love sharing what I've learned with students. I love learning from my students. I believe in each one, reach one, and teach one," he said. Cyntje eventually immigrated to the United States. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of the District of Columbia and then his masters from the University of Maryland. He majored in Jazz Studies. He said he enjoys both performing and composing music. "Music is our original language. There are things we can communicate with music that we can't with words," Cyntje said. He hopes students who take his classes will walk away with a greater understanding of music. That includes performance, music theory, and knowledge about the history of music. Cyntje enjoys inspiring his students. He said he tries to use music as a way to "address healing, promote social justice, and encourage students to be activists." He said he feels gratified when his students suddenly make that connection to his teaching; when the so-called lightbulb moment happens. However, he also has noticed since the pandemic, how some students struggle in school whether it is coping with mental health issues or other problems they now face. Music is Cyntje's passion. Last April, he released his eighth album. It is called 'Mosaic.' Critics have raved about it. Voters with CapitalBop, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz and creative music, named 'Mosaic' as one of the top five D.C. jazz albums of 2025. "This album is about creating a mosaic out of life's ups and downs. It is my most popular album to date with more than 130,000 streams on Spotify alone," Cyntje explained. 'Mosaic' also explores "how our worlds, dreams, perspectives, once shattered, can--like broken glass in a mosaic--be reassembled into something even more beautiful," Cyntje added. He wrote 'Stepping Stones: 15 Studies in Improvisation' in 2014. The book explores the art of improvisation. When he is not teaching, performing, writing, or composing, Cyntje said he enjoys listening to other people's music. "I love listening to jazz masters such as Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, J.J Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Sarah Vaughan, and more. They are prime examples of musical genius," he said. Cyntje said he draws his own inspiration from listening to these great artists and other musical talents.
