His parents were teachers, and he has continued in their footsteps at Montgomery College. Baker's father was an audiology professor at the University of Maryland. His mother taught elementary school children in Montgomery County Public Schools. Baker grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. As a teenager and young adult, he served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He was deployed to Japan on the USS Midway from 1981 to 1986. Baker worked primarily in the field of avionics which focuses on electronic systems in airplanes. He specifically worked on radar weapons systems for the Navy's F-4 Phantom fighter jets. He also worked on the flight deck as a plane captain. Once Baker left the Navy, he went to college. He received his undergraduate degree in 1989 from the University of Maryland where he majored in Government. Two years later, he earned his Masters of Public Management from the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. After graduating, he began working for the Federal Government. Baker has worked for the federal government for more than 30 years, mostly in the Information Technology field. His interest in teaching began while he was in graduate school and continued for several years. He worked as a teaching assistant in a number of statistics, economics, and math classes at the University of Maryland. He joined Montgomery College in 2004. While his background was in other subjects, he ended up teaching in the English and Reading Department because he had experience as a technical writer. Baker currently teaches English 101, English 102, and English 103. He mostly teaches distance learning classes, however, he also has taught some classes face to face on the Germantown and Rockville campuses. "I have thrived teaching online because it is easier to fit into my busy schedule, but I miss being in person," he explained. His students are mostly first year college students. He hopes his students will become good communicators. He advises students to keep their audience and purpose for communicating in mind when they write or speak. "Concise and well-organized writing also can be helpful," Baker said. He has thoroughly enjoyed his experience at the College. "I love teaching in an open enrollment environment with such a diverse group of students who are hungry to learn. The students want to improve their lives and the lives of others," he said. He believes the College provides the best education value over a two year period than any other institution in the country. "Montgomery College has a world class faculty full of caring and deeply talented instructors," Baker said. During his time at the College, Professor Baker has received wonderful feedback from his students. "I love it when my students ask me to write recommendations for them, and then come back later to share about their experiences and successes," he said. In 2021, the College presented Baker with the Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. The College recognized him for his innovative online teaching, compassion for students, and contributions to course design. Baker admits he has a certain approach to teaching. It is a philosophy he adopted decades ago. "I will stand by what was taught to me over fifty years ago. Positive reinforcement works best," Baker said. He has shown exemplary success in the classroom, and now, the English and Reading Department has tasked him with a special project. In the fall, he began to develop a microcredential for interested professors. The work is continuing, but Baker said, "We have developed three first tier badges in creative writing, analytical writing, and workplace/technical writing." His appointment is for one year, and he hopes to make progress on the microcredential program in the coming months. Baker has a lot of outside interests besides his work with the federal government and teaching. He loves to hike and travel.
