She is a conservationist, environmentalist, avian expert, and naturalist.</p>
<p>Wynia has taught several courses in Biology since joining the College in 2020. Those include Principles of Biology I, Natural Science of the Chesapeake Bay, and Environmental Biology. Wynia lives in Cedar Springs, Michigan and only teaches remotely. She joined the College when the pandemic struck. The Biology Department had a remote teaching job available and hired Wynia. She has been part of the College community ever since.</p>
<p>She grew up in Michigan and became interested in wildlife when she was a child. She and her father would spend time outdoors, and Wynia developed a love for nature.</p>
<p>After finishing high school, Wynia attended the University of Rhode Island where she earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Wildlife Conservation Biology. She also minored in Botany. She then went on to earn her Masters of Science in Biology with a focus in Ornithology from Arkansas State University. Wynia then pursued her doctorate in Biology with a focus in Ornithology from the University of North Texas.</p>
<p>Wynia is an avian ecologist. She loves studying and learning about birds. Her favorite bird is the Magellanic Woodpecker. She studied this species as part of her dissertation research in southern Chile.</p>
<p>"They are the largest woodpeckers in South America, and in my opinion are a charismatic and striking species. The male has a bright, red head, and the female has a black curly crest. I not only appreciate their beauty, but the value they bring to their ecosystems," Wynia explained.</p>
<p>She is not a fan of House Sparrows or other invasive species. Wynia does not appreciate birds that she said "outcompete native species for resources."</p>
<p>Studying nature is not a risk free adventure. Wynia conducted a lot of fieldwork as she pursued her graduate degrees.</p>
<p>While in Arkansas, "I was working in forests with many dangerous and sometimes difficult species. I encountered bears, alligators, feral hogs, venomous snakes, poison ivy, mosquitoes and ticks. Not all these species were scary, but they definitely made fieldwork more interesting and challenging," she said.</p>
<p>While people routinely see birds flying in the air, individuals may not know how important they are in nature.</p>
<p>"Birds have instrumental value to people. For example birds help pollinate plants, disperse seeds, reduce human stress, and provide aesthetic value. Birds are essentially the only taxonomic group that is easy to observe in many habitats. We can find birds on every continent," Wynia said.</p>
<p>She explained birds have many interesting behaviors. For example, crows can remember people's faces and can solve puzzles.</p>
<p>"Many avian species can mimic sounds and words, and many make incredibly intricate nests. Unfortunately many avian species have declined and are threatened due to climate change," she said.</p>
<p>Wynia enjoys passing on her knowledge about nature to her students. When she was an undergraduate, she was inspired to teach by her Wetland Ecology Professor, Dr. Frank Golet.</p>
<p>"He was an amazing professor who cared deeply about his students, and I wanted to instill that passion, excitement, and care in students," Wynia said.</p>
<p>"I hope students experience my enthusiasm for science and teaching. I hope it inspires them to find something about which they are equally passionate and enthusiastic. I also hope students experience a relaxing, respectful environment where diverse backgrounds are welcome," Wynia explained.</p>
<p>She holds her students to high standards while making sure they reach their academic goals.</p>
<p>"I want them to be successful professionally and personally which is why I stress the importance of deadlines, professional communication, and advocating for themselves. I want my students to finish my course with a strong understanding of the material. I also want them to know I cared about them and supported them to the best of my ability," Wynia said.</p>
<p>When Wynia is not teaching, she enjoys observing birds in nature and being outdoors. She also enjoys traveling and learning new cultures. In addition, she said she loves to cook, bake, camp, hike and curl up with a good book.</p></story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>AmyWynia.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/AmyWynia.png</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/tn_0.png</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/di_0.png</href></display_image><category_name>Employee News</category_name><submitter_email>elizabeth.feldman@montgomerycollege.edu</submitter_email><submitter_phone>301-646-8551</submitter_phone><story_summary/>

A highlight of the event will be a student panel, where students will share their advising needs, reflect on their experiences, and offer insights into what has most effectively supported their success. Their perspectives will help ground the conversation in the lived realities of MC students and reinforce the importance of coordinated, student-centered advising.</p>
<p>In addition to the student panel, members of the Academic Advising Leadership Team will present the proposed model and outline the roles and responsibilities of program advisors, counselors, and success coaches within this holistic advising framework. Participants will then engage in breakout sessions focused on advising roles and responsibilities, with opportunities to provide input about the model's design and identify gaps, resource needs, and professional development priorities. This collaborative dialogue is designed to ensure that the framework reflects the expertise of MC employees while advancing a shared vision for holistic student support.</p>
<p>Everyone is welcome! To register for summer 2027 classes, follow the instructions below:</p>
<ol>
<li>Register for classes by logging in to MyMC, and navigating to the Register and Pay for Classes card. Click the Register Now link.</li>
<li>From the Registration menu, click Register for Classes.</li>
<li>On the Select a Term page,<strong> choose the Summer 2026 term</strong>, then click Continue.</li>
<li>On the Register for Classes page, enter your search criteria and click Search or Advanced Search to view available classes.</li>
</ol>
<p>Tip: Once the search results appear, click the course title, which is a hyperlink that opens the course details. The pop up window displays information such as the course/section notes, instructor/meeting times, corequisites, required textbooks &amp; materials, attributes, enrollment/waitlist and fees.</p>
<ol>
<li>Add classes by selecting the sections you want. If a class is full, you may have the option to join a waitlist.</li>
<li>Review and submit your selections in the Summary area to complete registration. If there is a registration error that you do not understand, check registration error help.</li>
</ol>
<p>For detailed, step by step instructions, see How to Find and Add Classes: <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/admissions-registration/course-registration-guide-navigation.pdf">https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/admissions-registration/course-registration-guide-navigation.pdf</a></p>
<p>Need more help with registering for classes? Now she's a sophomore managing more than $5,000 in weekly revenue and planning her transfer to the University of Maryland or George Washington University.</p>
<p>She chose Montgomery College's Macklin Business Institute for the hands-on experience and she says, "It's amazing. It's better than I expected."</p>
<p>At MC, students like Nicole build real skills while preparing to transfer to four-year universities.</p>
<p><strong>Hands-On Experience from the Start</strong><b></b></p>
<p>In the Macklin Business Institute, students gain hands-on experience early.</p>
<p>Nicole started working at the student-run MBI Caf&eacute; as a freshman.
In addition, she said she loves to cook, bake, camp, hike and curl up with a good book.</p></story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>AmyWynia.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/AmyWynia.png</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/tn_0.png</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.png</rawname><href>attach/50c04b18-3859-6864-edcd-04b13ee61753/di_0.png</href></display_image><category_name>Employee News</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category>10</display_order_in_category><story_summary/>

Following a recent evening outing, the team received a complimentary email from local educator Katie White, a Pre-K teacher, highlighting the team's positive impact during a fundraiser at McDonald's.</p>
<p data-start="439" data-end="736">The restaurant was hosting a "McEducator Night," where a portion of sales during a designated two-hour period supported a local PTA fundraiser. According to White, the Raptors initially hesitated to enter due to the busy atmosphere, but ultimately decided to come in and place a large group order.</p>
<p data-start="738" data-end="947">What made the experience unforgettable was the timing. The team completed their order with just 14 seconds remaining before the fundraiser ended--allowing their purchase to count toward the PTA donation effort. As the countdown unfolded, the entire restaurant rallied behind the team, cheering them on as they placed their order. When the final transaction was completed in time, the restaurant erupted in applause, creating a fun and uplifting moment for everyone in attendance.</p>
<p data-start="1219" data-end="1377">White praised the team's enthusiasm and willingness to participate, noting that the student-athletes represented the College in a positive and meaningful way. Moments like these reflect the Raptors' commitment to community engagement and demonstrate how small actions can leave a lasting impression beyond the field.</p></story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>BaseMainPhoto.png</rawname><href>attach/2fbccbcc-91f9-bb24-09aa-1db337f43cd7/BaseMainPhoto.png</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.png</rawname><href>attach/2fbccbcc-91f9-bb24-09aa-1db337f43cd7/tn_0.png</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.png</rawname><href>attach/2fbccbcc-91f9-bb24-09aa-1db337f43cd7/di_0.png</href></display_image><category_name>Athletics</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category>30</display_order_in_category><story_summary/>
