Pollard, President Subject: Changes to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) President Trump's rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is a sad development for the College, our local community, and our nation. It is disappointing that those who followed the rules established for their continued residency under DACA are now vulnerable to losing that status and the opportunity that it represents. It is disturbing that children and adults who, in most cases, know no other home than this country, may now have their families shattered. This announcement has created considerable anxiety among Montgomery College's DACA students, their families, and friends. In the face of this decision, the College is committed to continuing its long term support of DACA students. Our College has a history of defending the right of all persons to study so that they can develop their talents and skills and better contribute to their communities. Because today's proclamation by Attorney General Jeff Sessions lacked sufficient details, the College is still investigating the potential implications for our students. I have asked my leadership team to create a comprehensive online resource through which student questions about this policy shift will be answered: potential impacts on financial aid, enrollment services, recruitment, admission, and more will be clarified. At this point the College is still awaiting complete information from the Trump Administration so that College leaders can assess how implementation fits with MC processes. I will communicate further about the College's steps to support those affected as we learn more. Some basic information from the Administration is available at the <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2017/09/05/frequently-asked-questions-rescission-deferred-action-childhood-arrivals-daca" target="_blank">Department of Homeland Security.</a> In the meantime, I urge the College community to let our DACA students and our Dreamers know that they are always welcome at Montgomery College. The College will be providing extra support for students who need help navigating the requirements of the Maryland Dream Act. Students should be assured that the College will protect confidential information about immigration status and student identity from any authorities without a subpoena. I am encouraged by some early bipartisan developments and will work tirelessly with Maryland's US Senators and Representatives in the hope that Congress will find a permanent solution for our DACA students. The College will continue to fight to allow DACA students to keep the tuition rates they currently enjoy. I will consult with the Board of Trustees and the Montgomery College Foundation to explore ways in which the College might help DACA students to continue their education at Montgomery College if a legislative solution is not created. It is my fervent hope that DACA students at MC will focus on their studies and continue working towards their educational goals. These students are a vital part of our community--our friends, our classmates, and our neighbors--and deserve the dignity of developing their talents through education. As I said in <a href="http://insidemc.montgomerycollege.edu/details.php?id=83310title=Statement_Urging_Trump_Administration_to_Maintain_DACA_by_Dr._DeRionne_Pollard,_President_of_Montgomery_College" target="_blank">my statement</a> Friday, hundreds of DACA students at Montgomery College are diligently studying to improve their lives and those of their families. Their talents, perspectives, and work ethic are integral to the character of our College and our county, and contribute to the strength of our workforce. Barring their legal participation in our communities is not only an injustice to them, but a loss for our neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces. This decision undermines our nation's commitment to immigrants, and to our historic role as a land of opportunity. Since many hard working DACA students would be unable to afford college tuition without the work permits that DACA provides, many would be forced to end their studies, curtailing their ability to contribute to the communities in which they were raised. Several prominent humanists have been credited with this statement, which captures a sentiment I share about this historical moment: "Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members--the last, the least, the littlest." I urge lawmakers and citizens to keep this in mind as they consider how our DACA students are treated. TPSS kicked off the week by welcoming 86 new students to campus on Monday, August 10, followed by the Germantown campus welcoming 131 new students on Tuesday, August 11. Rockville wrapped up the week by welcoming 200+ new students on Thursday, August 13. Welcome Day focused on building community, creating a sense of belonging, and providing new students with the tools they'll need for success at MC and beyond. The event was packed with campus tours, Resource Fairs, Counseling & Advising wisdom, meetings with department heads, Rita's Ices, and Monty. Because every new Raptor needs to meet THE Raptor! While Welcome Day was the biggest New Student Orientation event of the summer, it certainly wasn't the last. This initiative was led by the Student Parent Program within the Student Affairs Division in close partnership with the Facilities team. Together, the spaces were thoughtfully planned, designed, and implemented to support the unique needs of parenting students and their families. The creation of these spaces allow parenting students to remain connected to campus while providing their children with access to child-friendly activities and learning materials. Each location includes family-centered features such as children's books, activity stations, colorful furnishings, interactive technology, and comfortable study areas that foster both academic success and a strong sense of belonging. Room locations for each campus will be added once confirmed, including the designated space within the Germantown Library, so students can easily identify where the spaces are located and how to access them. The creation of these spaces reflects an ongoing commitment to removing barriers, supporting student success, and recognizing the full lives and responsibilities of students. bdd4b726-aa27-bb24-392f-f8e735f0e4151264352026-08-17 00:00:01.000Elizabeth FeldmanPart-Time Faculty August SpotlightBy Liz Feldman On Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute Part-time faculty member Dr. Jose Vega has spent his entire career in education. He has earned numerous degrees and certifications in education, math, and technology. Vega joined the College in 2023. He teaches a number of computer science courses through the Computer Science and Technologies Department on the Rockville campus. They include Computer Concepts, System Analysis and Design, and Introduction to Scripting. Vega is originally from Puerto Rico. He attended the University of Puerto Rico in Carolina and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. He also holds an associate's degree in hotel and restaurant administration. He later earned his master's in finance and master's in education from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Vega also holds two doctorate degrees. One is in finance from Northcentral University in Prescott, Arizona and the other is in Business Administration Information System from Universidad del Turabo in Puerto Rico. He was a school teacher in Puerto Rico for 18 years and then served another 9 years as a school director. He taught mostly math and technology classes. When he retired from the Department of Education in Puerto Rico in 2022, he accepted an offer to teach Computer Science at John F. Kennedy High School in Montgomery County. About six months later, he joined the College. Vega also teaches at Bowie State University. Vega comes from a family of teachers. His father is a retired welding teacher, and his mother is a retired social worker who was employed in a high school. Some of Vega's siblings also are teachers. He has developed a teaching philosophy over the years that he said is student-centered, collaborative, and forward looking. "I like to create an environment where learners feel both supported and challenged. I emphasize adaptability and connecting theory to practice. I also encourage critical thinking, and I try to foster problem solving skills that extend beyond the classroom," Vega said. He said he hopes students who take his classes will "learn how to break complex problems into smaller parts, think logically and systematically, test assumptions, and approach ambiguity with structure." Vega said teaching energizes him, and he loves sharing his knowledge about computer science. "Teaching computer science never feels stale because new tools emerge, cybersecurity threats evolve, development paradigms shift, and artificial intelligence is changing workflows," Vega said. The Laurel resident is one of three part-time faculty members honored in 2026 with a Shoenberg Fellowship. Vega's research focuses on how artificial intelligence is transforming educational practices in computer science and technology. He said he hopes it will raise important questions about AI's impact on student learning and skill development. "This study examines the extent to which the use of ChatGPT influences students' development of debugging, problem solving, and independent critical thinking skills in coding courses. The research investigates whether the use of ChatGPT inhibits student development and reduces hands-on practice. It also exams whether students' reliance on ChatGPT promotes dependency that limits independent and critical thinking to code," Vega explained. Early results from his study show while ChatGPT may offer short-term efficiency and support, excessive reliance on the tool does not appear to inhibit students' ability to learn and develop critical thinking skills. "The study highlights the need for pedagogical frameworks that balance the instructional benefits of AI tools with strategies that preserve hands-on practice and cognitive skill development," Vega said. He presented his research at The 2026 World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Applied Computing. The event was held in Las Vegas last month. Often there is talk today about how AI will replace the need for coders in the future. Vega does not subscribe to that theory. "I don't see that happening. My experiments with using ChatGPT for coding indicates there will always be errors, and you need people with coding experience to fix the errors. I see ChatGPT as a way to help with coding but not as something that will replace the need for people who are coders," Vega said. When Vega is not conducting research or teaching, he enjoys watching sports, in particular basketball. He used to play baseball and basketball but these days he is just a fan. He also enjoys going to the gym. The Raptors enjoyed a memorable 2025 campaign, finishing 23-5 overall, posting a perfect 12-0 conference record, capturing the Region 20 Championship, and advancing to the Mid-Atlantic District Championship. Although the team's national tournament hopes fell just short, the foundation has been set for another championship run. With longtime head coach Patricia Westenberg stepping away from the program, former top assistant Richard Carter takes over as head coach. Carter inherits a championship culture and is focused on guiding the Raptors back to the top of the region while pursuing the program's first NJCAA National Tournament berth. New Faces Ready to Make an Impact Montgomery College returns several key players from last year's championship team, including team leader in kills Sofiia Mateshuk. However, the Raptors will feature a significantly new-look roster after graduating nine sophomores. New middle hitter Zina Ashe-Moncet will look to fill the role left by Hillary Malik, while sophomore transfer Makayla Holland will share the starting setter position with freshman Aniya Gallion. The talented incoming class will look to step into key roles and continue Montgomery's winning tradition. The preseason will focus on building team chemistry and identifying the next generation of playmakers as the Raptors prepare for another challenging schedule. Montgomery will also travel to Rockford, Illinois, for the first time to compete in the Opening Weekend Tournament, one of the largest and most competitive junior college tournaments in the country. The Raptors will open against perennial powerhouse Kirkwood Community College, which finished fifth at last year's NJCAA National Championship Tournament. "This will be an exciting year for the Raptors. I believe we have built a great roster that will be able to compete at the highest level. We know the other teams in the region have been recruiting great players and preparing for the season. Tri-Match - Saturday, September 26 Fans can enjoy two Montgomery College matches in one day during the annual home tri-match. 11 a.m.Montgomery College vs. College of Southern Maryland 3 p.m.Montgomery College vs. Allegany College of Maryland Rivalry Match - Tuesday, September 29 | 6 p.m. The Raptors close out their September home schedule against regional rival Frederick Community College. Sophomore Recognition Night - Wednesday, October 7 | 6 p.m. Montgomery College will honor its sophomore class prior to its match against Carroll Community College.
