(See: https://uiowa.edu/ombuds/top-ten-reasons-why-people-dont-consult-ombuds-office). I find this list to be applicable to any community, including Montgomery College. As such, I wanted to share the list of reasons and provide some helpful information responding to each concern. I have also added two additional concerns that have been shared with me over the past year at MC. Please feel free to let me know which, if any, of these concerns apply to you. Due to space limitations, I am going to focus on points seven through 12, leaving the other six points to be discussed in part two of this article. Here we go: 12 "I didn't know the Office of the Ombuds existed." The Office of the Ombuds has existed at MC since August 2013. My predecessor, Sarah Espinosa, and I have been doing our best to get the word out regularly via marketing materials, outreach by email, and in-person presentations. Please let me know if you think I should present to your group/organization/division. I am happy to do so! Also, please feel free to check out the Office of the Ombuds website at: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/ombuds 11 "I don't know what the ombuds office does." It helps employees better understand the issues at work and come up with possible paths for resolution. There is no problem too small to consult the ombuds about. And, there are many ways the ombuds can help an employee, including referring the employee to another person or office either internal or external to the office, mediating, facilitating a conversation, participating in shuttle diplomacy (serving as a liaison for parties involved), role playing (so as to empower the visitor to have a difficult conversation on his/her own), training, and more. 10 "My issue is too small; the Ombuds Office only deals with crises." Please do not ever hesitate to call the ombuds office about any size problem at any time in the evolution of the issue. I agree with the University of Iowa ombuds, who said "We encourage visitors to call us early and often: the earlier the better and the smaller the issue the better, since we [often] have a better chance of resolving the issue that way." 9 "My issue is too big. It has been going on for too long, and the ombuds will not be able to help at this time" As stated above, the ombuds office is here to help a visitor with a problem that is big, small, or anywhere in between. If you have a workplace issue of any size and want to try to resolve it, please know you can contact the ombuds! 8 "Human Resources - or the Dean's Office - or Equal Opportunity and Diversity - is already involved." While other parties may already be involved through some formal channel, please know that the ombuds is always here as a neutral, confidential, informal, and independent supplemental resource. Sometimes it helps to be able to have a conversation with another person (especially one who is there to listen actively to you and who is trained to help people find alternative options to resolve conflict). Moreover, as the ombuds, I will not share any information that you have shared with me with any other parties unless I have your express permission to do so or there is imminent risk of serious harm. Finally, while I am not allowed to engage in formal processes, through HR or the union, for instance, I am able to work with visitors before and after they participate in these formal processes. 7 "I should be able to solve this on my own." Many people believe that they should solve all issues on their own. In fact, it is difficult to shoulder conflict alone, regardless of whether you have the skills and are comfortable doing so. The ombuds office is here to help you better clarify your issues and options for resolution. Ultimately, you will be solving the issue by making the best choice for you as to how to move forward. The Office of the Ombuds is here as an extra support along the way. This campaign allows the public to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. We accept prescription, over-the-counter, and pet medications. </p> <p>Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor's supervision. Unused drugs that are flushed down the toilet contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old prescription drugs. Over the past nine years, more than 100 faculty members from a variety of disciplines have participated in a structured and supportive environment of reflection to enhance their teaching and to promote student understanding and success. Faculty participate in four monthly meetings per semester, discuss books related to community college pedagogy, and post reflections related to their teaching. They also have the opportunity to meet with well-known scholars and to attend workshops. Participants receive 1.5 ESH for the Spring and 1.5 ESH for the Fall. When faced with Gibson's cancer diagnosis, Gibson and Falley work together to continue to create art and build community. Sponsored by AFCEA, a nonprofit that supports technology education and connects government, industry, and academia, the Cyber Challenge brought together 27 attendees, including 23 students, three staff members, and one faculty member. Students worked together to outsmart a virtual hacker through an interactive escape room experience.</p> <p>MC's own Professor Reza Mirabrishami served as the event's master of ceremonies and spoke with students about the importance of participating in challenges like this to build their skills and apply classroom learning. He also emphasized the value of developing knowledge in artificial intelligence as students prepare for a rapidly changing technology landscape. Professor Mirabrishami is partnering with PIC MC to host another challenge in January 2027.</p> <p>The "Beat the Hacker" experience encouraged teams to identify cybersecurity risks and make informed decisions together. Challenge topics included phishing, fraudulent text messages, password security, voice cloning, and deepfakes, connecting cybersecurity concepts with threats students may encounter at school, at work, and in their personal lives.</p> <p>Just 20 points separated the top three teams:</p> <ul> <li>First place: Winnars, 574 points. Tyler Hall, Alexander Soruco, Honora Owusu-Afriyie, Christopher Delasos, and Chance McNeil.</li> <li>Second place: tinalaya, 563 points. Christina Quach and Laya Vennapusa.</li> <li>Third place: The Ringed Seals, 554 points. This is incredible," he said.</p> <p>That curiosity eventually led him from coding to machine learning and artificial intelligence.</p> <p><b>Building with AI</b></p> <p>One of Zia's projects started right at Montgomery College.</p> <p>For RaptorHacks, he created <a href="https://study-sync.app/" target="_self" title="https://study-sync.app/">Study-sync.app</a>, an agentic AI study app designed to help students identify what they need to study and where they are strongest and weakest.</p> <p>The project earned him an award for Most Technical App at RaptorHacks. Zia also earned an award at Raptor Tank.</p> <p>He's also developing ZIZOPilot, a self-driving software project that he hopes will eventually be able to operate a car autonomously. He's currently working on models and features such as lane-keeping assistance.</p> <p><b>Learning and Leading</b></p> <p>Zia is president of Montgomery College's AI Club, where students learn about machine learning, how AI models work, and how to use and build with AI. "On the mailing list, we have about 106 members," he said. He's also an organizer for RaptorHacks.</p> <p>For Zia, AI isn't replacing software engineers. She joined the College two years ago. Robinson teaches Sociology courses in the Education and Social Sciences Department on the Takoma Park-Silver Spring campus.</p> <p>Robinson always has had a love for museums and libraries. "As a child, I would ask to go to a museum for my birthday," Robinson said. "There is something about seeing history and art on display that really scratches the part of my brain that craves a hands-on educational experience," she added.</p> <p>Robinson was born and raised in Chicago. She earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Urban Studies and Public Policy at Dillard University, a liberal HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in New Orleans, Louisiana.</p> <p>She earned her Master's in Sociology at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. She also is pursuing her PhD in Sociology from the same school.</p> <p>Robinson moved to the D.C. region to conduct fieldwork for her dissertation.</p> <p>"My research focuses on identity, memory, and racial meaning at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)."</p> <p>She became interested in this topic years earlier after she had visited the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa.</p> <p>"I saw so many parallels between the experience of Black Americans and that of Black South Africans as they battled against anti-black racism in their respective countries," Robinson said.</p> <p>There are parts of the Apartheid Museum that she still vividly remembers almost 7 years later. One of those exhibits is called political execution.</p> <p>"There were nooses hanging from the ceiling to represent each prisoner whose death was labeled a suicide during the apartheid regime. However, later it was revealed they were killed by law enforcement and the information was hidden," Robinson explained.</p> <p>Her trip to the Apartheid Museum made her reflect on her childhood experiences when she visited the The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in Chicago. One exhibit focused on Fred Hampton who was a member of the Black Panther Party.</p> <p>"In 1969, Hampton was murdered in his sleep by members of the FBI because of his involvement in the Black Panther Party and his support of socialism. Similar to the Apartheid Museum, the DuSable Museum acknowledged the death of a prominent social activist. However, it did not recognize it as the brutal assassination of a Black Power activist at the hands of the United States government," Robinson said.</p> <p>She explained these examples are illustrative of how democratic countries acknowledge race and racism within political and social institutions. This led her to examine the National Museum of African American History and Culture.</p> <p>Earlier this year, Montgomery College awarded Robinson a Shoenberg Fellowship. She is one of three winners in 2026. Robinson said she plans on using the fellowship to continue her exploration of NMAAHC. She specifically wants to document how the museum with its racial equality mission is perceived and presents itself as it "navigates the increasing tension between the expectation of nonpartisanship and the call to remain true to its social justice commitment."</p> <p>Robinson said she hopes to complete her dissertation by next year. When her research is done, she plans to share her findings with her colleagues in her department. She also may present some of her findings to the Office of Visitors Service at the NMAAHC.</p> <p>Robinson said she loves teaching at MC and she feels honored to be a part-time professor here. She always had an interest in teaching.</p> <p>"Growing up, I wanted to be a teacher, and I frequently tutored high school students," Robinson said.</p> <p>While she initially pursued other opportunities after she graduated from Dillard, she circled back to teaching.</p> <p>"I remained fascinated and inspired by educators, and through the mentorship of a professor at Dillard, I enrolled in a PhD program where I could explore the topics that interest me and teach others. So when I moved to the DMV to do my fieldwork, I thought this would be a great opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I learned in my program to my own class. It has been an amazing experience teaching at MC," Robinson said.</p> <p>She wants her students to walk away from her class knowing they are capable of great things.
