Montgomery College faculty have been supporters and users of Collaborate for the better part of the decade; while Collaborate has a strong core of regular users, many of MC's faculty have migrated to Zoom since the Covid-19 pandemic. With our Class Collaborate Ultra contract expiring on June 30,2024, we are asking faculty to migrate to Zoom. Zoom has added a number of new features such as notes, clip and surveys to go along with the whiteboard and online polls. It is much more user friendly for the classroom environment than it was just a few years ago.

All spring courses will have access to the Collaborate tool through the end of term.

Starting in summer 1 session 2024, you will need to use alternate tools for video/audio web-conferencing and collaboration, such as Zoom or MS Teams.

All Collaborate recordings will be inaccessible after June 01, 2024. The vendor will permanently delete all recordings after the cessation of the contract.

If you have any recordings that you wish to keep, you must download the recordings. Please, do not download to Blackboard. Recordings can be downloaded and saved to Yuja, YouTube, OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, or MS Teams and linked to courses

If you used Collaborate to record lectures that you wish to re-use, make sure there are no students in the recording. Recordings cannot be used if there are students from a previous course section in the recorded session videos (due to federal privacy laws that ensure no identifiable student information can be gained in a different course).

Downloading and saving Collaborate sessions does take some time so please do not wait to get started.

Downloading recordings:

Open the Recordings and click on the Recording Options menu to the right of the session you want to view. Then click Download.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like assistance, please do not hesitate to contact dl@montgomerycollege.edu.
</story_body><attached_files/>

We also recruit our local four-year universities for a transfer fair for students. The deadline for oral talks is March 11 and for posters is March 15. Proposals can be submitted on our website: https://www.mcsc.website

Don't forget to register to attend the conference as well! Since Montgomery College is hosting it, we have 10 free registrations for students! When the humanities are separated from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), societies are in danger of losing critical and compassionate perspectives--its heart, which helps us mediate and interrogate how we should use technological tools. The idea is that if we know each other better as individuals, we break down the hierarchy of who is important and who is not (hierarchy of human value). By knowing each other better, we are better positioned to tackle the important policies, practices, and narratives that are barriers to fulfilling the mission of the College.About the MC TRHT Campus Center:Montgomery College is one of more than 70 higher education institutions across the country with a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center, which is an initiative of the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U). MC's TRHT Campus Center aims to provide community healing activities that promote narrative change in order to dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human values and to prepare the next generation of leaders to advocate for racial and social justice. MC's TRHT Campus Centerwas launched in 2021 with generous support from AAC&U and the Meyer Foundation.
</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>Racial Healing Circles Being Offered in March by the MC TRHT Campus Center.pdf</rawname><href>attach/9e73c755-dcb5-f674-3141-4585d7bdd0fe/Racial Healing Circles Being Offered in March by the MC TRHT Campus Center.pdf</href></file></attached_file></attached_files><display_image/>

Merit Badge Universities are held across the country at higher education institutions to help scouts work towards or complete merit badge requirements. Such badges can help with career exploration, civic education, and cultural awareness while introducing scouts to the college campus environment.

Nearly 200 scouts of all genders, ages 10-18, from Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia participated in Merit Badge University. A total of 15 merit badges were offered: Animation, Archaeology, Automotive Maintenance, Chemistry, Crime Prevention, Digital Technology, Emergency Preparedness, Energy, Fire Safety, Inventing, Moviemaking, Programming, Public Health, Radio, and Theater. Unfortunately, the Graphic Arts badge was canceled when Merit Badge University shifted to an afternoon-only event rather than an all-day event due to inclement weather. Many of the badges had wait lists due to the popularity of Merit Badge University.

Approximately 45 volunteers from the College and the community served as badge counselors (instructors), assisted in the classroom, and supported event logistics. MC volunteers were from all four divisions and the Office of the President and included faculty, staff, and administrators. Community volunteers included six members of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and three members of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Many volunteers are involved in scouting or were scouts as a youth, so appreciated the opportunity to support the event.

The Merit Badge University was co-led by Dr. John Hamman, Chief Analytics and Insights Officer, and Rose Garvin Aquilino, Associate SVP for Advancement and Community Engagement, with the support of Stacey D. Miller from the Office of Special Events, and working in partnership with NCAC BSA staff and volunteers. Additional College support was provided by Facilities, Public Safety, Media Resources, IT Security, the Office of Compliance, Risk, and Ethics, and the Office of Community Engagement. Merit Badge University was truly a collegewide effort and many thanks to all those involved in making this event a wonderful success. NCAC BSA, participating scouts, and parents also expressed gratitude to the College for hosting the event.

The NCAC BSA was organized in 1911 and is one of the oldest and largest councils with nearly 34,000 youth members. They strongly encourage interested applicants to apply for more than one program. If you want professional, hands-on experience working with refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants, apply to be an intern with the IRC in Silver Spring!

The IRC was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world providing humanitarian support. In Silver Spring, the IRC works with refugees the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.

IRC internships give interns the opportunity to work directly with refugees to support them in accomplishing tasks needed to live successfully in the U.S. We offer 16 unique internships that provide a wide variety of opportunities to develop different skills and gain experience including:

Anti-Trafficking

Refugee Walk-in Casework

Career Development

Community Engagement

Economic Empowerment

Refugee Employment and Skill-Building

Refugee Employment Coordination

Financial Capabilities

Gender Equity

Immigration

Children's Legal Services

Refugee Walk-in Services

Extended Case Management

Refugee Health and Social Integration Intern

Refugee Resettlement

Youth Program

Most internships require a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week. Through a strong partnership with the accounting profession, ASDP offers community college students a one-week residency during which they are immersed in personal and professional workshops while exploring the accounting profession.

There will be a virtual meeting for students to learn more about ASDP and ask questions on Thursday, February 29 at 1 p.m.

Meeting registration link https://howard.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kdOCtqT0uGdKNN5h1lFqYTmzT7uKQgump

Application link: http://tinyurl.com/2024ASDP

Their goal this year is to double the number of institutions represented so more students can have an experience similar to the one summarized here:

"ASDP has been really life changing for me. Before coming into the program, I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in accounting and specialize in tax. Leaving the program, I now have a keen interest in forensic accounting and different avenues under the tax umbrella. This program was orchestrated beautifully. From the different panel of experts to the site visits, the information on internship/scholarship opportunities, resume building, LinkedIn profile creation, the words of affirmation and encouragement, and the level of representation and inclusion were unmatched compared to anything else I've ever experienced in my life. The confidence, knowledge and understanding of the path I want to take now is all because of ASDP, thank you!" - 2023 ASDP Participant

For more information, visit: https://cae.howard.edu or email caehusb@howard.edu
</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>ASDP_HowardUniversity.gif</rawname><href>attach/a313dc63-ea69-3e64-9d1d-1374bfbe201d/ASDP_HowardUniversity.gif</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.gif</rawname><href>attach/a313dc63-ea69-3e64-9d1d-1374bfbe201d/tn_0.gif</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.gif</rawname><href>attach/a313dc63-ea69-3e64-9d1d-1374bfbe201d/di_0.gif</href></display_image><category_name>Student News</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category/>

Her focus has been to improve the lives of girls and women around the world. She is an active supporter of an Indonesian feminist non-governmental organization (NGO) called Yayasan Jurnal Perempuan (YJP). The group publishes articles and journals about gender issues. It also funds scholarships for women who want to pursue degrees in higher education. The organization advocates for social justice, reproductive rights, and opposes violence against women. The group also supports the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Effendi was born in New Delhi, India even though her parents were from Indonesia. Her father was in the Foreign Service, and her family moved around a lot. When she was five years old she moved to Ethiopia, and later to Budapest, Hungary where she attended elementary school. She went to North Bethesda Middle School in Bethesda, Maryland and then graduated from McLean High School in McLean, Virginia.

She attended college at the University of Indonesia in West Java where she majored in philosophy. She earned her master's degree in social psychology from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France, and later finished her Ph.D. program in philosophy from the University of Indonesia.

Effendi married her husband, Richard Pollard, in 1994 and several years later she began her teaching career in Indonesia. She worked as a senior lecturer in the Philosophy Department at the University of Indonesia between 1997 and 2017. Her work focused on gender and social justice issues.

When she was not teaching, Effendi worked on social and community development issues for several non-profit organizations. In 1995, she founded an NGO that addressed women's rights and social justice issues. Her primary work at that time focused on the trafficking of women and children, violence against women, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental justice.

Even though Effendi was working for the University of Indonesia, she and her husband moved to the United States in 2008. A decade later, in 2018, she joined Montgomery College. Effendi teaches in the Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice Department. She has taught classes on the Rockville and Takoma Park campuses. She teaches courses in Sociology and Sociology and Gender. Effendi said teaching has always inspired her.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is the opportunity to positively impact students' lives and contribute to society's overall well-being. I find a deep sense of purpose in my work as a teacher," Effendi said.

She said her course in sociology often involves discussions of controversial and sensitive topics.

"Navigating these discussions while maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment can be challenging especially when students hold diverse perspectives," Effendi said.

She hopes students who take her class will apply sociology in their personal lives by becoming active members of society and appreciating diversity. She said students today face many challenges in their lives, especially mental health issues.

"We must create a supportive environment where young people feel comfortable discussing their feelings and challenges. It is important to foster a sense of community and belonging, and celebrate diversity," Effendi said.

She also hopes people will get involved in causes they feel passionate about. Effendi is a strong supporter of Yayasan Jurnal Perempuan (YJP).

"The group is hoping to build an online library that will have feminist and LGBTQ+ research, literature, novels, poems, and brief policies regarding women's rights and human rights. It also has training modules on religious tolerance, LGBTQ+, Islam, and violence against women it would like to store and make accessible. The library also will keep documentary films on women's rights. The group is trying to raise $10,000 next year to realize this dream. I am contributing my books to make them available in the group's future library," Effendi said.

When Effendi is not teaching or helping advocate on behalf of women and girls, she and her husband enjoy bird watching and kayaking on the Chesapeake Bay. She also participates in activities to help her stay mentally and physically strong. She enjoys yoga and meditation. She also is actively involved in her community on the Eastern Shore where she lives part-time. Effendi volunteers her time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for neglected and abused children. She serves in Talbot, Queen Anne's, Dorchester, and Kent counties.
</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>GadisEffendi.gif</rawname><href>attach/6703d392-48e1-93c4-fddb-324e377f13f4/GadisEffendi.gif</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.gif</rawname><href>attach/6703d392-48e1-93c4-fddb-324e377f13f4/tn_0.gif</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.gif</rawname><href>attach/6703d392-48e1-93c4-fddb-324e377f13f4/di_0.gif</href></display_image><category_name>Employee News</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category/>
