<p>The new identity gives Raptor Athletics a distinctive presence of its own while still maintaining a clear connection to Montgomery College. Developed through a collaboration between Athletics and <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/offices/advancement-and-community-engagement/marketing-and-communications/index.html" target="_blank">Marketing & Communications</a>, the identity will provide a consistent look across uniforms, apparel, facilities, digital platforms, merchandise and promotional materials.</p>

<p>The new visual identity features a cohesive family of logos designed to be bold, modern and competitive while remaining unmistakably MC. <p>"Our Raptors are talented competitors and dedicated students who bring a lot of ambition to everything they do," said Tarlouh Gasque, executive director of intercollegiate athletics. "This new look reflects that caliber of student-athlete and the pride that comes with representing Montgomery College."</p>
<p>The refreshed identity is also part of a broader effort to strengthen College pride and belonging. Athletics provides an important point of connection for members of the Montgomery College community, and the new Raptor logos create more opportunities to make that connection visible across the College and beyond.</p>

<p>Marketing and Communications, in partnership with the Office of Information Technology, has launched a redesigned <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/news/index.html" target="_blank">Montgomery College Newsroom</a>, transforming the former "Press Room" into a more contemporary, accessible, and engaging home for College stories, media coverage, and expertise.</p>
<p>As a central hub for institutional storytelling, the Newsroom update is part of a larger strategic effort to strengthen how Montgomery College tells its story.</p>
<p>Visitors will notice the difference immediately. The redesigned main page features three prominent Top Stories, giving MarComm the ability to highlight timely and important stories through a strong visual entry point. A refreshed design--with headline treatments, category icons, publication dates, and clearly identified media outlets--makes it easier to scan the latest news and find content of interest.</p>
<p>Finding specific stories is easier, too. New filters allow visitors to browse press releases, media mentions, and feature stories and narrow content by topics such as students, alumni, and faculty and staff. A dedicated Newsroom search bar now narrows results to Newsroom content specifically, rather than the entire College website.</p>
<p>Two other popular sections have also received significant updates. <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/news/mc-in-the-news/index.html" target="_blank">MC in the News</a>, which showcases external media coverage of the College, now presents stories in a more intuitive chronological format. And the redesigned <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/news/mc-experts.html" target="_blank">MC Experts</a> page makes faculty and staff expertise much easier to discover, eliminating multiple steps previously required to browse available experts.</p>
<p>While the new look is important, the larger goal is to make the Newsroom work harder for the College. <p>The SCRB is an important part of the College's student conduct process. Trained members of the Montgomery College community may be selected to participate in hearings involving serious alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct. Board members review information, listen to the individuals involved, ask thoughtful questions, and help ensure that the conduct process is fair, impartial, and consistent with College procedures.</p>

<p>Join us for our new planetarium show<i> One Sky</i>, a feature-length program created from a series of seven short films highlighting our world's many cultures and communities with strong connections to the stars.</p>
<p>Today's exploration of our Universe is informed by traditional knowledge and we honor those societies and Indigenous explorers who came first. Our journey through time will show us <i>The Forge of Artemis</i> (Greece), <i>Hawaiian Wayfinders</i> (Hawaii, USA), Thunderbird (Diné/Navajo Land, USA), <i>Jai Singh's Dream</i> (India), and more.</p>
<p>This show is the result of a collaboration between astronomers, planetarium professionals, educators, and cultural experts from Canada, China, India, Japan, and the United States. It was created to build cross-cultural connections and increase understanding of different indigenous perspectives while demonstrating how our one sky connects us all. We hope this show highlights the connection between all people who share our One Sky.</p>

<p>This 2025 film explores the life and work of the late poet and activist Andrea Gibson and their wife, fellow poet Megan Falley. When faced with Gibson's cancer diagnosis, Gibson and Falley work together to continue to create art and build community. This is a story of collaboration and hope even in the most challenging of times.</p>
<p>The MC library has numerous e-copies of the poetry collection <i>You Better Be Lightning</i> for those who would like to explore Gibson's work. Over the past nine years, more than 100 faculty members from a variety of disciplines have participated in a structured and supportive environment of reflection to enhance their teaching and to promote student understanding and success. Faculty participate in four monthly meetings per semester, discuss books related to community college pedagogy, and post reflections related to their teaching. They also have the opportunity to meet with well-known scholars and to attend workshops. Participants receive 1.5 ESH for the Spring and 1.5 ESH for the Fall. <p><strong>21003: Pregnancy and Pregnancy-Related Conditions</strong> reflects the College's commitment to creating an accessible, inclusive, and supportive environment for students, employees, and applicants who are pregnant or experiencing pregnancy-related conditions. It also supports the College's compliance with multiple federal and state requirements, including Maryland House Bill 6, which has an October 2026 compliance deadline, and establishes a consistent institutional framework for addressing pregnancy-related needs across academic and workplace settings.</p>
<p>The policy establishes the College's overarching commitments and responsibilities related to pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, including nondiscrimination, reasonable and appropriate accommodations, leave, and access to lactation space. The accompanying procedure lays out the processes for requesting, reviewing, and implementing academic and workplace accommodations; identifies roles and responsibilities; and addresses pregnancy-related absences and leave, health and safety considerations, lactation and breastfeeding, confidentiality, and protections against discrimination.</p>
<p>Public comments on the proposed one-page policy will be accepted through <b>October 7, 2026</b>. In accordance with College Policy 11005, Formulation and Issuance of College Policies and Procedures, a shortened comment period is necessary to allow the policy to be presented to the Board of Trustees in time to support compliance with Maryland House Bill 6. <p>At Montgomery College, the computer science student is building AI projects, leading the AI Club, and helping organize RaptorHacks, a coding competition where students build and present their own apps.</p>
<p>His interest in computer science started when he was about eight years old after seeing Grand Theft Auto V and wondering how video games were made.</p>
<p>"I was like, how do people make these games? This is incredible," he said.</p>
<p>That curiosity eventually led him from coding to machine learning and artificial intelligence.</p>
<p><b>Building with AI</b></p>
<p>One of Zia's projects started right at Montgomery College.</p>
<p>For RaptorHacks, he created <a href="https://study-sync.app/" target="_self" title="https://study-sync.app/">Study-sync.app</a>, an agentic AI study app designed to help students identify what they need to study and where they are strongest and weakest.</p>
<p>The project earned him an award for Most Technical App at RaptorHacks. Zia also earned an award at Raptor Tank.</p>
<p>He's also developing ZIZOPilot, a self-driving software project that he hopes will eventually be able to operate a car autonomously. He's currently working on models and features such as lane-keeping assistance.</p>
<p><b>Learning and Leading</b></p>
<p>Zia is president of Montgomery College's AI Club, where students learn about machine learning, how AI models work, and how to use and build with AI. "On the mailing list, we have about 106 members," he said. He's also an organizer for RaptorHacks.</p>
<p>For Zia, AI isn't replacing software engineers. It's changing how they work.</p>
<p>"It's more AI-assisted coding, not AI taking over coding jobs," he said.</p>
<p><b>What's Next</b></p>
<p>After Montgomery College, Zia plans to apply to four-year universities, including the University of Maryland and Carnegie Mellon University.</p>

<li>MC Professor Aram Hessami will be discussing his latest book, <em>In a Couple of Words: Prolegomena to Any Substantive Democracy in Iran</em>. This discussion focuses specifically on Iranian political dynamics. All students and members of the local community interested in Iranian politics are welcome to attend. This event is scheduled for September 23, at TC 136 from 7-9 p.m.</li>
<li><!--StartFragment-->Political science and sociology professor Andrew Krieger will be presenting the life of Polish Underground Resistance fighter and Georgetown academic Jan Karski. This presentation will detail Karski's time in the Polish Army, his temporary captivity in a Soviet camp as a POW, efforts joining the Polish Underground, and how he learned and distributed information about The Nazi's Final Solution to the Allies as early as 1943. It will then discuss Karski's transition into academia, where Andrew Krieger met him as a student. This event will be particularly interesting to folks studying WW II, The Holocaust, and the forced migration WW II caused. It will be held on October 7 at TC 136 from 1:30-3 p.m.<!--EndFragment--></li>
<li><!--StartFragment-->Local public historian Anthony "Tony" Cohen will be giving his presentation on his third trek to Canada from Maryland where he conducted research on the Underground Railroad. He completed this journey twice in the 1990s, and has spoken with multiple different communities to distinguish legends from facts. He also reenacted a part of Henry "Box" Brown's story by traveling in a crate from Philadelphia to New York. It will be held on October 21 in SW 301 from 5-6 p.m.<!--EndFragment--></li>

<p>On September 14, 2026, a U.S. federal court issued a preliminary injunction temporarily blocking the new U.S. Department of Homeland Security rule affecting F-1 students that was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026. As a result, the new rule has not taken effect, and the current Duration of Status framework remains in place at this time.</p>
<p>We will continue monitoring developments and will provide updates as additional information becomes available. We understand that changes to federal immigration policy can create uncertainty, and we want you to know that we are here to support you as members of the Montgomery College international community.</p>

<p>Part-time faculty member, Douglas White, has always been fascinated with biology. His interest began when he was a young child.</p>
<p>"My mom recognized this early in my life. One of the first books I can remember her getting me was about Louis Pasteur who was a French scientist and microbiologist. I was 7 years old when she bought the book for me and it was my favorite. Once I took Biology in 7th grade, I was hooked," White said.</p>
<p>He was born in Nebraska. However, he moved around as a child because his father served in the military. White lived in Florida and Delaware before his family settled in Stafford, Virginia. He attended Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.</p>
<p>He earned his master's in Biology from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Then, he received his PhD in microbiology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>After he earned his PhD, White began working as a Biomedical Life Scientist for SAIC and as a Patent Examiner for the United States Patent and Trademark Office.</p>
<p>However, his interest in teaching began when he was working on his master's degree at Hampton University. He taught some lab classes and said he really enjoyed the experience. White said one of his mentors was Dr. Ed Smith who taught at Hampton.</p>
<p>"His teaching style was engaging and made learning fun. Not only could you talk to him about academics, but also about life. I have tried to emulate that approach in my teaching and interactions with my students," White said.</p>
<p>Once White earned his master's, he began to teach. His first job was at a middle school where he was a 7th Grade Science and Geography teacher.</p>
<p>"It was the hardest job of my life, and I had worked construction before," White explained.</p>
<p>"I have such respect for those educators who teach at the elementary, middle, and high school level. I only lasted a year, but it opened the door for me to start teaching summer classes at Hampton University. That led to a full-time teaching position there. It was that job where my love for teaching at the college level was born," White added.</p>
<p>He began teaching at Montgomery College in 2021. White teaches Microbiology on the Rockville campus. He also is a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator for Introductory courses in the Biology Department at Howard University.</p>
<p>He hopes students who take his classes will appreciate how Microbiology or Biology has useful real-world applications.</p>
<p>"What's learned does not just have medical applications, but there are industrial and agricultural applications as well that can impact their daily lives," White said.</p>
<p>After all, White explained, biology is the study of life. "Our understanding of how life is structured, how life functions, how different life forms interact are all beneficial for our health, technology, general knowledge, and so much more."</p>
<p>He added, "Biology itself is endlessly intriguing, but if I had to pick one thing that I wish I had an answer for, it would be cancer. The disease has affected so many people and I wish I had an answer for reversing the switch that made those cells divide uncontrollably. It is great to have treatments, but it would be amazing if there was a cure."</p>
<p>White said he feels extremely gratified when his students suddenly grasp difficult concepts.</p>
<p>"In Microbiology lab, students have to figure out unknowns based on the techniques they've learned up to that point. For example, they get one gram-negative bacterium and one gram-positive bacterium and have to identify each without my help. It can be nerve-wracking for these students and to see them identify them correctly is awesome. There is such a sense of pride and accomplishment when they get it. I love seeing that because they identify these bacteria by using the skills they've learned and mastered," White said.</p>
<p>White loves teaching at the College. He enjoys the diversity of the student body and he appreciates the chance to work with some "amazing educators."</p>
