MC Library is celebrating Banned Books Week 2026 this October 4 - 10. Every year, the American Library Association collects reports of attempts to censor books and compiles the information to understand trends in censorship. During this week, we raise awareness about the prevelance of censorship and advocate for freedom of information.
According to the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom, in 2025:
- Over 4000 individual titles were challenged.
- 39% of the books challenged in 2025 feature LGBTQIA+ individuals or people of color.
- 66% of challenges resulted in the book being banned.
- 92% of challenges were initiated by pressure groups or government officials.
During Banned Books Week 2026, MC Library encourages the Montgomery College community visit our Book Banning and Censorship guide to:
- Educate yourself! Learn more about the dangers of censorship.
- Read a banned book! MC Library has many banned books in our collection for the MC community to borrow.
- Advocate! Join campaigns like United Against Book Bans and report attempted censorship in your community.
