Over October 17-19, Montgomery College nursing students and faculty demonstrated their commitment to community service by volunteering at Remote Area Medical (RAM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, pop-up medical, dental, and vision care to individuals who face barriers to accessing healthcare. Arriving bright and early for a 5 a.m. start, students supported the clinic in delivering essential healthcare services to community members in need.
Working in clinic triage, students demonstrated keen assessment and health history-taking skills, along with compassionate therapeutic communication. Their participation provided a valuable opportunity to apply nursing knowledge in a real-world setting while supporting access to care for underserved populations.
Through the collective efforts of volunteers and healthcare professionals, the clinic served nearly 800 people and provided an estimated $455,275 in healthcare services. This meaningful experience highlighted the importance of community engagement, interprofessional collaboration, and compassionate, patient-centered care in nursing practice.
