Find out about Smithsonian Faculty Fellowships: Applications Due October 15
The Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship program is seeking proposals from Montgomery College faculty who are interested in working with colleagues from across the disciplines to innovate their teaching in 2011. To find out about how the Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship program enriches learning at Montgomery College, visit the Smithsonian Faculty Fellows web pages at: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/smithsonianfellows/. Here is what 2009 Faculty Fellow Professor Mimi Mann (English, Rockville) has to say about her Fellowship experience: "The Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship truly changed my life and, I believe, the lives of many of my EN101 students. Our project was 'Lens on Social Justice: A Seat at the Greensboro Lunch Counter 50 Years Later.' My students were asked to define 'Social Justice' by studying an object, in our case the portion of the lunch counter in Woolworth's where four black college students changed history when they dared to sit on the stools in the traditionally all-whites section of the store. The peaceful sit-in changed history, and 50 years later my two EN101 classes studied the 1960 events in Greensboro and beyond on the eve of the 50th anniversary celebration, including a class visit to the Lunch Counter, now on prominent display in the National Museum of American History on the Mall. My students' passion grew as the project progressed, and their creativity and critical thinking greatly expanded during our month with the project. MCTV filmed our journey in a 10-minute video, now on YouTube." View the video created by Mimi Mann and her students with the help of MCTV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68XKmqIYjpE. Applications for the 2011 Paul Peck Humanities Institute Smithsonian Faculty Fellowships are due on Wednesday October 15, 2010. The 2011 theme will be "The Politics of Identity: Race in 21st century America." With the goal of integrating a museum experience into the classroom, Fellows will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Smithsonian Institution and speak with world-class curators who will discuss the issues that museums face in educating the public through their collections. Spring 2011 seminars will include sessions at: National Museum of the American Indian: http://nmai.si.edu National Museum of Natural History: http://mnh.si.edu National Museum of African American History and Culture: http://nmaahc.si.edu National Portrait Gallery: http://npg.si.edu National Museum of American History: http://americanhistory.si.edu Full and part-time faculty from all disciplines are welcome to apply for this interdisciplinary one-year program.
