Career Services Name Change to Student Employment Services
Montgomery College Office of the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Date: February 19, 2018 To: Montgomery College Community From: Eric Myren, Director of Student Employment Service Re: Career Services Name Change to Student Employment Services Montgomery College uses a collaborative approach to providing comprehensive career planning and employment services to students and alumni. By combining expertise, resources, and support from counseling and advising, academic departments, student employment services and other affiliated units we empower individuals to make and implement well-conceived career plans and secure internships and employment. To more clearly and intuitively reflect the role of the various units assisting students and employers, the "career services" area is changing its name to "student employment services" effective immediately. This will help reduce confusion with the counseling and advising department that assists students with career assessment/career exploration and decision-making through courses (STSU120), individual appointments, and special programs and initiatives. The primary role of "student employment services" is to help students prepare for and find employment and to make linkages with the employer community. Student employment services provides the following services:
  • Help students to clearly articulate their transferable and specific skills
  • Develop focused employment objectives based on their career goals, educational level, skills, and interests
  • Support students in writing effective resumes, cover letters, reference lists, thank you notes, and other job search documents
  • Assist students to improve their interview skills through mock interview sessions
  • Train students to locate (online or elsewhere) job/internship postings and career information and to use other tools (such as networking and informational interviewing) to uncover the "hidden job market"
  • Guide students in selecting appropriate job/internship positions for which to apply
  • Coordinate on-campus employer recruiting, job fairs, and other events to help students connect with employers
  • Conduct job search and pre-employment related workshops for students
  • Coach students in appropriate and professional use of social media to enhance rather than hinder their job search
  • Provide resources and information to students on behavioral and performance expectations in the workplace
  • Refer to other campus and community resources, including counseling & advising and academic departments
  • Oversee the cooperative education and internship program which supports learning through applied experience
  • Provide embedded classroom support on the topics identified on the list above For more information go to http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/ejobs or contact me directly.
