NOTICE: Upcoming Building Work on Rockville Campus
Burt Hill, Inc. is designing the renovation of the Science East and Science West Buildings on the Rockville Campus. This is the firm that designed the new Science Center. The renovated buildings will house the Math Department and the Math/Science Center. A Science Engineering and Mathematics Complex will be formed upon construction completion. To proceed with the design, the architect team needs to study the existing conditions of SE and SW. This requires that they remove areas of the brick facade to examine the various structural elements. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, the structural engineers, have prepared a forensics work plan. American Restoration Inc., the contractor, will perform the work April 13 - 17, 2009. There are several areas on SE and SW where they will remove brick, investigate, and replace the brick. You will see workers on lifts and/or scaffolding operating saws and hammering April 13-14 starting on or before 7 AM and working 10 hours per day. The operation will generate considerable noise and dust. The Office of Environmental Safety has studied the work plan and has cleared the contractor to proceed because no asbestos-containing building materials will be revealed or exposed in the process. The process will take 2 to 3 hours per area. The sequence of work will be performed to minimize disturbance to classes to the extent possible. The forensics investigation will commence on April 15 - 16. This work is quiet. You will see engineers on lifts and/or scaffolding making visual observations, taking pictures, collecting samples, and/or taking measurements with gauges. The final day April 17, the contractor will replace the brick. You will see the masons on lifts and/or scaffolding reinserting the brick and applying mortar. No work may be performed in the event of inclement weather. Work will proceed after rain showers, usually the next day. SGH will be on site throughout the work supervising the contractor and ensuring that all work is per the approved plan.
